Do you realize what we are seeing here? We are seeing a preview of how the federal government would handle a massive terrorist attack on a large American city.

Whoa. That's sobering. Makes me thankful that we have what we need to depend our home right here on hand.

"...I have one message for these hoodlums: These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so if necessary, and I expect they will."

Idiot... And how, pray tell, are they going to hear your message? They have no power for radios or TV, they haven't seen any kind of official for 5 days! They have no idea what is going on in the world outside of a two block radius around them.

GET YOUR FAT @$$ IN A BOAT OR HELICOPTER AND GO TELL THEM YOURSELF YOU STUPID OLD BAT!!!

It is really easy to Monday Morning Quarterback!

You're right. That's why I've been very careful about saying things. It IS scary to see what's been happening there though. And you've gotta believe that if our heroes in uniform have been exercising restraint or staying away it's because that's that they've been told to do. I told hubby last night that I wish those MedEvac helicopters who were fired on had an Apache for an escort. The press seems to be calling for shoot to kill, but you know as soon as the first degenerate is fired on down there we'll see endless stories of how he was "really just a good boy caught up in the wrong crowd" and if they'd "only given he a chance she would have straightened out." The press is gonna play this one out both sides of their mouths ~~ whichever way they can score more points against President Bush.

"Have any of these great and exalted black "leaders" issued a statement asking for their brothers in New Orleans to stop the violence?"

No, Reverend Jackson said on Larry King Thursday night that the reports of snipers was exaggerated.

It isn't just the federal government that is MIA on the security front in New Orleans. The governor has completely failed this state. Little Miss Weepy Blanco has abandoned her role as leader. Why are there no National Guard killing the bad guys? Blanco has not sent them in. She doesn't know how to handle a crisis and the bad guys know this. They are taking advantage of her panic and indecision. I really think she has a good heart and is sympathetic. But she has no idea how to respond to a tragedy. Why is NO in chaos and Mississippi appears to be on the road to recovery? Barbour vs. Blanco is your answer. Haley Barbour responded in Guilliani-esque fashion. While Blanco just stood there with a deer-in-the-headlights stare at the camera babbling about being overwhelmed.

She gave NO to the bad guys. And now she is in denial about just how bad things have gotten. Shepard Smith gave us a great look at the insanity that has broken out in NO. But the governor is just saying that it's all rumor and everything is ok. Is she for real? Blanco plays her violin as Rome (NO) burns. Don't look to Washington for someone to go after for the failures in LA. Just look to Baton Rouge for the reason why, once again, LA is a failure.

I want to know what the mayor and governor did with the homeland security funds that were given to the city of NO for evacuation plans in the event of a disaster. Evacuation plans would need to be in place for hospitals, prisons, schools, etc. and these same plans could be used in the event of a natural disaster as well, couldn't it? Why did they not resort to those methods of evacuation or shoring up the areas that couldn't be evacuated before the hurricane struck? And yes I know at the time they thought it was level one but it seems to me as unpredictable as weather can be you should take precautions beforehand.

"They have M-16s and they're locked and loaded," she said. "These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will."

That's not an order. That's a description and a threat, like when my wife tells the kids: "I'm going to speak to daddy." Assuming a gaurdsman kills one of those things, will she protect him or her against civil or legal action in the liberal court-orgy that's to follow?

Has anyone issued an order that would assume responsibility?

The buck stops at the mayor of each affected city, the president of each affected parish, and the governors of the affected states. Gov. Blanco seemed stunned that the federal government was immediately on the scene. Why did she have that opinion? It was because she, like millions of Americans, believes that we don't truly have a "federal" government, but a "national" government. She mistakenly believes that her state is but a subdivision within that national government and that she's somewhere on that org chart.

She's wrong. Her state is her responsibility. That she was not prepared for a disaster like this is her fault. I know this sounds callous, but in fact there is no responsibility on the part of the federal government to help the states deal with such disasters. Go look at the Constitution yourself and you'll see for yourself. There is nothing in there that authorizes Congress to appropriate funds for disaster relief and nothing about the Executive Branch dealing with disaster relief.

There is an account of Congress voting to provide relief to a veteran's widow when her house burned down. This occurred sometime in the 1830's and the account details how U.S. Rep. Davy Crockett - yes, that Davy Crockett - convinced Congress it was wrong to appropriate those funds as it was not their money to give. Click here.

Yes, there is a precedent. And that is the problem. Originally, the states were like sovereign nations of their own. The Constitution created a union of those states with a limited federal government to keep the states trading together and to protect them from foreign invasion, etc. Over the years, the states became more and more dependent upon the federal government and the original model was forgotten. State militias were relegated to the National Guard which was basically turned over to the federal government with very little state control.

In the aftermath of the hurricane we're seeing two things. Among the people in NO we're seeing the results of decades of leftist brainwashing that convinces a large number of people that they are "entitled" to something as well as widespread acceptance of the ghetto thug culture. With the people responsible for governing these people we're seeing the results of decades of leftist dependence upon the federal government to fix every little problem.

I'm not going to blame Bush. I'm not going to blame FEMA. I blame the people of NO, their mayor, their parish presidents, and their governor for being unprepared. This is not the federal government's fault, this is their fault. The people have forgotten that they are the government. And now they've got the government that they deserve at it has proven to be deadly.

Totally and absolutely correct.

The Governor of Louisiana should have declared martial law BEFORE the storm struck, evacuated the city and had units ready to deal with looters.

She is a total incompetent.

But Bush should have stepped in imediately when it appeared she was not taking strong enough steps to control the violence, nationalized the Louisiana and adjoing National Guards and done it himself.

We're seeing a preview of how the federal government is going to react when -- not if, when -- Islamic terrorists manage to launch a devastating attack on a major American city.

Sadly, as callous as it sounds, the following quote from a NO cop to a tourist is right on target, unfortunately:

"Tourist Debbie Durso of Washington, Mich., said she asked a police officer for assistance and his response was, ``'Go to hell - it's every man for himself.'''

Looters are the horse thieves of the 21st century. They should be dealt with in similar manner.

Taking a man's horse put his life in danger. For that reason, horse thieves were hanged.

The news media has failed to give an adequate appreciation of how devastating to the rescue and relief effort the looting and violence have been. Thousands of National Guard troops that might otherwise be giving aid instead must focus on restoring order. Thousands more rescue and relief workers have been delayed or diverted because no one can in good conscience send these people into a war zone.

It's not the rescuers' fault, or the National Guard's. When one is fired upon, there are only two rational responses: return fire or retreat. Their rules of engagement called for the latter.

When time is critical, delays are deadly. What happened when the rescue and relief efforts were delayed should come as no surprise to anyone. While armed thugs looted and pillaged, innocent victims died.

Primary responsibility for the consequences of the looting and violence should be placed where it belongs – with those who committed the looting and violence. The theft of anything not immediately needed to sustain life and any acts of violence can not be excused, and should not be rationalized. They are simply evil, and should be regarded as such.

We're seeing a preview of how the federal government is going to react when -- not if, when -- Islamic terrorists manage to launch a devastating attack on a major American city. We had warning on this hurricane. Days of warning. The Muslim terrorists have already issued their warnings ... do you think we're ready?

The looters. We can't lump them all together. There are those who are looking for food and water, and those who are looking to steal anything of value they can get their hands on. There is not one among you who would not break through the door of a grocery store or restaurant to find food or water in a situation like this. Shoot them? Not good. But clearly officials were too late -- much too late -- in showing that the random looting of businesses and stores would not be tolerated.

Aren't we all a bit tired of hearing the Governor of Louisiana tells us all how she is now ready to crack down on the lawlessness in New Orleans. She's been ready to crack down for days. Have you seen it on TV? Police say that they weren't arresting people because they didn't have any place to put them. One of the first responsibilities of government in times of disaster is to restore order. This means that you stop people from preying on other people. If some looters had been shot and killed on day one -- not at grocery stores, but at clothing, appliance or jewelry stores, or in the casinos or at an ATM -- if a looter had been shot the first day, we would have seen a lot less violence.

BQ...this is what many of us have been saying now, for days. Thanks, yankeedame, for posting this!!

That is an excellent point!

I remember a few years back when those fires were raging out of control in the West, Australia offered to lend a whole flock of their own firefighter to assist....ONLY after they got a U.S. government guarantee that neither the Aussie government or any of its firefighters could be sued in any way, shape, or form.

My streeet was hit by a tornado just before dark a few years ago. All night long, helicopters were patrolling overhead to handle any potential looting. Why wasn't this done in NO?

I believe Louisiana Politicians are the problem. Soon as Keith Olbermann transcripts are up from last nights show read the interview with Louisiana Senator ? (I forget his name).

This man could care less what happened to the poor population of NOLA. Your going to have to read between the lines but you'll get the message.

GW Bush in not to be blamed for the first few days, it's locale Louisiana Politicians that messed up NOLA, period.

Keith Olbermann transcripts for September 1st. (not posted yet)

While I agree somewhat about Geraldo, he pales next to Shepherd Smith, the ultimate drama queen in this disaster. After a while, I had to switch channels when he came on.

If any one commentator on the spot were to be graded on how to induce panic, doom and gloom and pessimism in the populace and those viewing, Shep would get a AA+.

At least Rivero on many occasions remembers who he's working for and gives fair and balanced comments on an event, issue or crisis he's watching.

Smith even gets hysterical when he welcomes viewers to his "Studio G", fer cryin' out loud.

"It is really easy to Monday Morning Quarterback!

Those old enough to remember or read have probably recognized by now that we have seen this looting scenario played out repeatedly in every racially charged situation where politicians in charge of the government are afraid to respond with appropriate force because of political correctness. Since when is it "Monday Morning Quarerbacking" when we have seen this instant replay countless times over the last four decades.

Democrats are living proof that you can fool some of the people all of the time.
