Critics Say Bush Undercut New Orleans Flood Control

President Bush repeatedly requested less money for programs to guard against catastrophic storms in New Orleans than many federal and state officials requested, decisions that are triggering a partisan debate over administration priorities at a time when the budget is strained by the Iraq war.
Even with full funding in recent years, none of the flood-control projects would have been completed in time to prevent the swamping of the city, as Democrats yesterday acknowledged. But they said Bush's decision to hold down spending on fortifying levees around New Orleans reflected a broader shuffling of resources -- to pay for tax cuts and the Iraq invasion -- that has left the United States more vulnerable.

So they admit that the funding at regular levels wouldn't have made a difference, but it is still Bush's fault because it is indicative of the President's priorities.
Tell me if I'm crazy, but what's the point of prioritizing funding for flood control when the results of full funding and half funding are basically equal?

I am no big fan of President Bush; but, it is Congress that controls the purse strings. So this accusation is absolutely bogus. Perhaps if Congress had sacrifice some of its pork projects we would have been able to improve the levees to spare many thousands of American lives.

You don't get it.First, in a liberals mind only intentions count. So, since Bush cut some programs that wouldn't have helped anyway he's responsible since his intentions were bad.
Secondly, it's always Bush's fault. Once you understand these two concepts you won't be asking those silly fact based rational questions anymore.

What the MSM has not done, is look in their own backyard -- in 1998 the Army Corps of Engineers provided a Draft Request to pursue the protection of noted areas in the Gulf region, to enhance their ability to survive heavy hurricane damage. So with eight years of the Clintons, what was done about flood control? Outside of Arkansas does concrete go away?
Now in the future "cut funding" can be referred to and the finer details will be forgotten. It will become baseline assumed truth as many lies have become. Even our most informed and articulate spokesmen fall prey.
