Fox News Channel ^ | 090105 | Shep Smith

Shep showed a dead body along the freeway. How low can you go to grandstand? Things are bad in N.O., but he didn't have to show it.

Give him a bit of credit here. I think he deserves an award for his coverage, actually.

I agree; and I don't like Shep...after Brit Hume's over, I always change the channel..not this week....

The seriousness of this disaster and what is happening is not getting through to folks around the country

You are so correct! I went to make my donation to the Salvation Army at Sam's Club today. No less than 4 people said "I haven't seen any news all week, I can't believe how bad it sounds down there.". And I'm in Austin so it's not like we are thousands of miles away.

BTW, the checker at Sam's club didn't know anything about donations. I found a "can" on the counter at the membership counter. I thought the donations were tagged for the Salvation Army. However, the can says "agencies". They are only taking cash and checks. Just wanted you to know you might have to look for the donation can if you go.

We have combat helicopters that could be used to drop food/water that are not being used.

Black hawks are being used. Cobras and Apaches would be unable to do it, but they could take out a few looters.

My husband was just about to leave and help our buddy in Pascagoula but decided to remain as things are getting too jittery at the pumps (those that are left) We gave him our truck, a generator, supplies and our prayers. It is just too weird down here. Can't explain.

No, I feel that Shep is one of the best young newsmen in the business.

This is not fanatsyland in the gul region. This is reality and Shep is reporting it. You can't candy-coat the reality of this disaster.

"Sometimes freepers are a bunch of twits. Or is it that a bunch of twits post on FR?
"

The latter, I think. If you can get past the noise here, there is a signal worth listening to. These days, the signal to noise ratio is pretty low, though.

Free Republic is probably the best news aggregation site on the planet, though.

So he should suger coat the situation and deny that people are dying even as they try to escape?
Or he should report that they are there yet offer no proof of his facts?

It's a horrible and devastating scene. Reporting the facts and showing the raw footage is not a problem from where I sit.

Personally, I don't think the networks should have 'saved us' from the horrors of 9-11 as they did. Perhaps if the reality of that situation had been known then people wouldn't have so easily forgotten.

I saw it. No one could have identified the individual from that shot. Facts are facts. The reality down there is terrible.

Personally, I LIKE Shephard Smith.

Maybe Shep/Fox figured this is the only way to get help brought down to the people there...the people who are asking for direction/help, water/food....and being, literally, ignored about what to do.

It actually happened earlier in the day, and was replayed later n....but here it is 24 hours later and the question has STILL not been answered.

I would have done exactly what he did had I been in his position.

I saw that too, when the police officer wouldn't talk to him. It exasperated Shep( as it should have) and I liked that he was persistent. I thought he did an excellent job reporting from the field. It was the officer who came across as a jerk.

That officer had no business getting into an exchange with any TV reporter including Shep Smythe. I'm sure he's under orders not to talk to reporters.

I saw that. I think it was done appropriately and it brought a good dose of reality to the situation.

IF anyone is listening to Todd Scnitt on the radio---he just said that 3 confirmations from New Orleans is that the city ordered 75,000 body bags....and people are dropping dead from dehydration.......

Schnitt is so mad---he says in todays world, there is no reason why there is still chaos and lack of food, water and medication .

I could feel the genuine horror from Shep and I think it is because he comes from that area. He got some excellent quotes from people who were just coming out of the water. I thought he was able to give the audience more of a "You are there feel" than any of the reporters there are on the scene.

The jerk was Shep. Sorry, don't get your POV.

Shep is a journalist, the cop had a job to do that didn't include grandstanding to relieve Shep's meltdown on TV.

Shep was losing it last night because he should be! How these people can be stranded that long with no food, no water, no information, little security makes me sick. I don't care what color they are, how long they've been on welfare, how fat they are (as someone commented on another post.) These are AMERICANS just like you. You are just bitching at Shep for pointing out what hurts your eyes and soul...don't shoot the messanger.

Initially it looked that way for those who rode the storm in New Orleans. How was he supposed to know what was going to happen?
