When you look close, there's nothing left in areas!

Thanks. These load very slowly, even on broadband. I checked Bay St. Louis. It's obvious where the storm surge went. Everything along the coast road is pretty much obliterated. You can see massive piles of debris four or five blocks inward where the storm surge came to rest. Homes further away from the shore don't look that bad.
I think what makes this storm different from Camille is that I don't think the winds destroyed these towns. It was the storm surge. Nothing close to the waters edge had a chance to survive.
I think Katrina may actually cause some reassessment in the way we rate hurricanes. Perhaps they need to be judged more on potential storm surge than on wind speed.

We used www.maps.google.com to help orient us to the terrain so we could zero in on FMC's families' addresses to check out damage in their areas. At least the satellite shot doesn't look too bad for them.
Some of the pics from the website load with a 90 degree tilt, so North is pointing East or West. You can use a picture editor to turn it the right way & then drill down.

Some of the photo's are haunting. I was just a little girl when Camile hit but to this day the memory of steps going to no where haunts me.

Click
here for Google's version of the area in the large photo. The NASA photo has been rotated counter-clockwise about 90 degrees from North-South. Note that you can pan the Google photo by dragging with your mouse.

That would be
NOAA imagery, not NASA. The photos are from a series of aircraft overflights. More info
here.
