trying to prove he's an upstanding guy after the Pat Robertson comments
I happen to think it's mostly this. "Look at me, I'm a humanitarian! Look at how silly the US is for criticizing me!"

Not exactly on the subject but I am amazed at the low loss of life so far. Looking at the devastation, you would expect thousands of dead.
On subject, I expect to hear from the UN anytime soon with offers of aid. I'm sure the World Bank will pony up too.
(sense the sarcasm?)

Yeah, I heard on Brit Hume that Chavez wanted us to release some of our strategic petroleum reserve to HIS citgo refineries.
He'll use our oil "for the poor" and take all the credit.

Remember the reaction after the tsunami? We were accused of being stingy and unwilling to help. I think I remember some U.N. biggy was out front criticizing us. Want to bet anybody's going to offer us anything? I'll bet Germany, France, Belgium and the rest are laughing and figuring we're finally getting our comeuppance.
To: andyk
I can't help but think that he only offered because he knew we would refuse.Or, he want to rub Robertson's face in it.

Watched FOX News this evening. They do this 'Around the World in 80 seconds' segment. Tonight they featured a power boat that had run aground near Newport Beach, CA. Apparently the operator had put the boat on auto pilot and fallen asleep ... probably helped by a stiff drink or two. Anyway, this was not some million dollar plus yacht, but something far more modest. Point is ... after showing people all the devastation in NO and along the Gulf coast ... with pictures showing boats piled up on top of one another like cord wood ... what to hell was FOX thinking?

My award for token gift of the day goes to ExxonMobil - a company which stands to rake in hundreds of millions in extra net profit from the hurricane, not to mention the hundreds of millions of extra profit they have made from the runup in prices over fear of what a hurricane could do - and yet they can only manage to donate $2 million!!!!! My employer suffered more damage than that and will donate more, instead of profiting on others' misery and giving a token donation......
XOM is scum.....

suuuuuure we will see it when the mosques in Saudi Arabia take up a collection to give directly, no strings attached to the SALVATION ARMY.

America
The silence is deafening the world around once again the United States alone Our Gulf States, torn and broken down levees broken, water over taking.
We hear not a word from the world we serve, no aide forth coming, no, not a word.
A tsunami, of silence gathers round the purse of the nations slam closed to our needs, News Orleans floating, no water to drink, no homes for it's people no food to eat.
And we hear silence from the world around not a word do we hear..hold on America we are here, we are coming to help your soaking states dry out, here's some food for your souls, here have some dry clothes.
We'll help you in your time of need, no sir there is no such a word... America we stand alone.

Venezuela. I was told that Venezuela has offered assistance. One. You mean like some free oil?
To: eraser2005
In 48 HOURS gas prices have risen 30 CENTS! in south Florida!
Not just at one station or at one chain, across the board.
To: squidcakes
But on a more serious note. What do you think the world thinks now that they see mass-looting???
To: Cinnamon
You know, you're right. I justwent to the UN website and a search with the word 'hurricane' gave no mention of Katrina or the US, but plenty of stories about assistance in other countries with Hurricanes Lili, Jeanne, Dennis, etc.
To: Cinnamon
I'll bet some Saudi shiek will write a check for 10 million so long as he gets to berate the Jews.
