Katrina destroys Brett Favre's family home
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre spent most of Monday and today nervously waiting to hear from family members in his hometown of Kiln, Miss., in the heart of the Gulf Coast area devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
The Packers said Favre finally spoke to his mother, Bonita Favre, late this afternoon when she was able to reach him with the help of a Houston television station, which was in the area covering hurricane damage.
According to the team, Favre said his mother reported spending Monday night in the family attic, along with his grandmother, after the entire house filled up with water within a matter of 5-10 minutes.
Bonita Favre indicated that the family home was destroyed and probably would have to be bulldozed, but said that everyone in the family appeared to be fine.
Bonita, along with Brett's brothers Jeff and Scott, had decided against evacuating and instead gathered at Favre's childhood home in Hancock County, one of the counties hit hardest by the hurricane. Favre said his grandmother, aunt and other family members also were there.
Favre said earlier today that he spoke to his wife, Deanna, Monday night and again this morning. He said she and their two children, 16-year-old Brittany and 6-year-old Breleigh, are safe at Favre's home in Hattiesburg, 60 miles north of Kiln, although their property had extensive damage.
Favre's mother was seven months pregnant with him when Hurricane Camille, which killed 256 people in Louisiana and Mississippi in 1969, struck the area.
"I've seen pictures," Favre said. "The damage was unbelievable."
Favre admitted he was "kind of going through the motions" in practice while waiting to hear from family members and said he plans to go home to Mississippi following Thursday night's preseason finale at Tennessee.
He said he could get permission from coach Mike Sherman to skip the game altogether and fly there immediately, but his wife told him there's no point because the area is unreachable.

Doesn't this make three seasons in a row that Brett has had to deal with a family crisis?
Yes... Thank God that no one in his family was killed.... I think that would have devasted him after the past 2 years. With his father dying, wife's cancer, and brother-in-law dying, and close friend Reggie White dying.
Thank you Lord for small miracles in all this.
(BTW GO PACK!)
This is just one story of many.
If you didn't have anything nice to say, maybe you should have stayed away from the thread....
BFD
Do you know anything of Brett Favre?
You are coming off sounding pretty idiotic.
1st
he has been clean of the painkillers for the past oh 10 years.
2nd
The man has faced tremendous personal turmoil in the past 2 years. He has had 2 family members die of illness and his wife stricken with cancer and friend reggie white die.
3rd
If you have ever met the man or listen to 1 interview he is down to earth and is not the arrogant sports start like say terrell owens.
So from the sounds of your comments you don't know a damn thing about Brett Favre. Maybe you should look up some information before making yourself look like an arse.
Holy smokes...Favre has been through the wringer the last two years (and throughout his life - recovering from boozing, Vicodin addiction, etc) with his wife diagnosed with breast cancer, his brother-in-law killed in a crash, and the death of his father.
Who hasn't had death and turmoil in life. I don't care if he is down to earth or not. He is no more important than anyone else and neither is his family. It's nice to know some media outlet got him hooked up with his family. I'm sure they are helping all the rest of the folks down there.
Regarding your tagline.
I suspect Miami OH may cover as OSU looks ahead to Texas. Then again, maybe not. I am not familiar with Miami of Ohio, I need to start doing my homework.
I kind of agree with you.
Wow, that was uncalled for.
Brett Favre has never once asked for the attention. In fact, he doesn't really care for it. But, he is in the spotlight, like it or not.
I think Miami of Ohio has some talent, but I don't know if it has the playmakers OHio State has, especially on defense.
I think that if the OSU offense can put it away early, the OSU defense isn't going to let up....
but if that doesn't happen, we will have a bit of a game.....
No one forced you to click on the thread.
What if someone you knew or a relative of yours was highlighted in the news and other people disparaged him/her? What would be your reaction?
satchmodog9 was pretty rude about it, but he does make a point. I don't thinks it's Bret's fault that the media reported the story.
He could have left the drugs off the table. Given that, Bret is in a lot better shape than most of the people. No matter how much money you have when childhood home goes, it always sad.
