My favorite story about how I became a conservative.

When I was in school, I lived with my mother in a small 2 bedroom apartment. She worked two jobs to make ends meet. She never wanted me to work, citing school was more important.

She worked at a welfare office, assisting clients with aid. She was told once that a client could not come to an interview because the pool man was coming that day to clean their pool.

I will say no more.

I remember one kid from back in my school days. He lived in a nice house with a pool and they had a satellite system. His father pulled in good money. The problem was that it wasn't steady or something like that. Somehow they got their kid signed up for free school lunches. Everyone knew this kid wasn't poor and every day he had to use that card for his lunch. I really felt sorry for him and couldn't believe that the system would work like that.

I will go ya one better. My mother, an attorney, had a social security client who came to his appointments with dark glasses acting blind. He had been a boat captain and could no longer work.

One day, he called and needed assistance paying his light bill. I called a local aid agency who said that though he was younger than their normal clients, they would help since he was blind.

Well, they called me in about an hour, having refused to help him since he drove his car into the lot and proceeded to fill out paperwork.

I asked him why his wife couldn't work to help pay bills but I quit wondering when they came back to the office and I saw all 500 pounds of her spread out in the back seat of their Town car.
