It should not be this way. America deserves better. We all know that the basic functions of the federal government need to be funded, and that it will take some system of taxation to do it. All Americans ask is that the method of taxation be fair, evenhanded, and easy to understand. We will gladly pay for the essential functions of government so long as we don't suspect that our money is being used instead to buy political advantage or to pay for past favors.
I would be just ecstatic if it could become law sometime before I die.
Same here...
Regards.
I was at the Houston signing last night. Considering a downtown location [read at least an hour driving round trip for most people in the area], limited parking [valet available, or park on the dark street a couple of blocks away], and no local publicity, the turnout was poor. Mostly FairTax staff, dedicated volunteers, and people they called to promote the event.
Unfortunately, Neal is new to the Houston market and is on a new station that did no PR for the event. They sent someone to put up posters about their station but didn't even have anyone stay for the event. Neal was PO'd that he listened to the station on the way over from Austin and they did not even mention the event. Something about a discussion of toilet seats that was apparently more important to their listeners.
If you would like to be added to this ping list let me know.
John Linder in the House(HR25) & Saxby Chambliss Senate(S25) offer a comprehensive bill to kill all income and SS/Medicare payroll taxes outright and replace them with with a national retail sales tax administered by the states.
H.R.25,S.25
A bill to promote freedom, fairness, and economic opportunity by repealing the income tax and other taxes, abolishing the Internal Revenue Service, and enacting a national retail sales tax to be administered primarily by the States.Refer for additional information:
Some have falsely claimed that the FairTax promises more money to consumers than what is available. Neal's statement is the way that I understand it. A redistribution of the existing tax burden with transparency for every taxpayer to see.
Bumping the thread...
Along with a little thing very few, if any, living Americans have ever experienced! A thing called:
F R E E D O M ! ! !
SSSHHH! You'll wake up the pinkos!
I cannot recall it's title but there is a GREAT scene in an old Bob Hope movie where someone is attempting to explain to Bob what a Zombie is.
After the explanation Bob responds: "You mean like a Democrat?"
It's the same thing I'm afraid!
Just as Karl Marx planned and wrote in his book in 1848. The income tax is the best way to defeat free enterprise. Defeating free enterprise is the best way to install Communism.
The Fair Tax is just the opposite. It gives the government incentive to create a good business environment.
What was the top Federal Income tax rate 100 years ago? I know the answer, but would like to hear from fellow FReepers' opinions as to where were then, and where we are now.
I would be happy to start over and work hard to prevent a repeat. Unless these vitamins work better than I expect, I would be here in 100 years. A clean slate can undo a lot of sins.
There are many problems with politicians and the FT wouldn't solve them all. It will solve some and it will remove an important arrow from their quiver, the present complex tax code, and the influence of the special interest working through that code.
I'm one of the people that I guess your accusing of making "false claims". You might want to check out these cites from the FairTax Book:
on page 59, they state: Once the FairTax takes effect, youll be receiving 100 percent of every paycheck, with no withholding of federal income taxes, Social security taxes, or Medicare taxes and youll be paying just about the same price for T-shirts and other consumer goods and services that you were paying before the FairTax.
Dr. Jorgensons report clearly showed that under his study the worker would not get their complete paycheck, because if he/she did, there would be no cost savings to the business and therefore no price drop associated with worker taxes.
on page 83: Remember that the poor, along with everyone elsewill no longer have Social Security taxes or Medicare taxes removed from their paychecks. Whatever they earn, they get on payday. For most of those we categorize as poor, this would mean an immediate 25 to 30 percent increase in their take-home pay.
On page 84, they make it clear though that even though the workers will keep all of their paychecks for a big raise, they still believe that because of the disappearance of the embedded taxes, the total price paid for consumer goods will remain very nearly the same.
By assuming these two things together, they misrepresent or misunderstand Jorgensons report and double-count the tax savings, first by giving them to the worker as a pay raise, and then at the same time assuming that there was a cost savings to the business.
On page 85 they again make it clear the worker will get the pay raise.
And then on page 111, they tie it all together with a Quick Review in which they erroneously assert Heres what happens when we pass and implement the FairTax plan:
We start collecting 100 percent of our earnings on our paycheck.
We all get virtual raises, since payroll taxes are no longer siphoned from our checks.
The prices of consumer goods and services remain essentially the same, with the removal of the embedded taxes compensating for the added consumption tax.
Do you think that these passages promise more money to consumers than what is available?
Would you at least agree that there is a big difference between:
Description A- We start collecting 100 percent of our earnings on our paycheck. We all get virtual raises, since payroll taxes are no longer siphoned from our checks. The prices of consumer goods and services remain essentially the same, with the removal of the embedded taxes compensating for the added consumption tax.-- The FairTax Book and
Description B- We all get a reduction in our gross paycheck to the amount we currently earn after-tax. We all have the same amount of take-home as we have now because no federal income or payroll taxes will be taken out. The prices of consumer goods and services remain essentially the same, with the removal of the embedded taxes compensating for the added consumption tax.-- Reality under the FairTax
Wonder why he didn't write the book this way?
a few more cites:
Page 82: "it would create a financial bonanza for the poor and the middle class."
Page 85: "it's clear that low-income Americans will be better off, much better off, under the FairTax Plan... income tax abolished...whole paycheck with no federal withholding.. and they would recive a payment each month...Wow.
Page 88: "for those in the lowest income levels...it's all benefit and no burden."
Page 138: "The FairTax would give the average income worker a 50% increase in take-home pay."
Do you still think I'm making false claims. This book should've been subtitled: There IS such a thing as a free lunch!
Dear RobFromGa,
Stories certainly do change in a hurry. LOL.

Don't they.
Indeed!
There's only one way to kill capitalism--by taxes, taxes, and more taxes. --Karl Marx
Frankly, I have always suspected that some of them are getting paid for their posting (we did have at least one "intern" tell us she worked for the organization).
The only case I know about where someone was exposed for being paid to post on FreeRepublic was a Fairy Tax supporter.
Dear Always Right,
Really? I'd like to know more about that. Thanks.
