Scores of insurgents killed, wounded in various operations

Iraqi forces and the Multi-National Force (MNF) killed and injured scores of insurgents in various operations in different Iraqi areas, said Wednesday a release by the Iraqi government.
According to the release, 20 suspects, including four weapon-specialists, were arrested in Mosul after an attack against Iraqi police. In another attack, an Iraqi soldier was injured in another attack in Mosul.
In Balad, Iraqi police arrested 20 suspects for stealing gas.
Due to their relation with blasts in Baghdad, 10 terrorists were arrested.
After launching an attack against Iraqi forces in Tikrit, 10 terrorists were apprehended; while in Ramadi a gunman was killed and 23 others were arrested after targeting the MNF with two bombs.
In Kurmah, six terrorists in possession missile launchers and explosive material were arrested.
As a result of a massive vicious terrorist attack in Baghdad, two Iraqi policemen and 10 civilians were killed, as well as 38 persons were injured.
In press statements, the Commander of Iraqi police Special Forces Major-General Rasheed Fliah said that six terrorists involved in the attack were killed and six others were arrested.
Also, 11 MNF members were injured in Ramadi due to an attack by a terrorist in a booby-trapped car.
Two MNF soldiers were injured when their patrol was confronted by a suicide attack.
In other developments, security forces found caches containing a variety of light and heavy weapons in Fallujah and Baghdad.
(All of the western news services had stories about the attack in Baghdad but I had to go to a Kuwaiti source to find out that the terrorists paid a price for this attack)
Afghan raids kill eleven Taliban rebels
ELEVEN suspected Taliban rebels, including a local commander, died in two separate raids by US and Afghan troops ahead of Afghanistan's key parliamentary elections, officials said overnight.
Five Taliban were killed and and two were arrested early Wednesday during an operation in Chora district of strife-torn Uruzgan province, which is in southern Afghanistan.
"The joint forces launched an operation in the area and after hours of fighting they killed the five Taliban, among them a famous Taliban commander called Mullah Painday Mohammed," Uruzgan governor Jan Mohammed said.
A large cache of weapons and explosives were also seized, he added.
Six more Taliban were killed on Tuesday when joint forces surrounded a house in Sahak, a remote village in the restive southern province of Zabul, where the rebels were manufacturing remote-controlled roadside bombs, an official said.
"After more than one hour's exchange of fire, six Taliban were killed and lots of weapons, explosives and remote-control devices were seized," said provincial spokesman Gulab Shah Ali Khail.
There were no casualties amongst the Afghan or US-led troops, he said.
Militants from the ousted Taliban regime have stepped up attacks before the polls on September 18.
They frequently use roadside bombs to target US troops and Afghan personnel. In the past week four US soldiers and four Afghan police have been killed by the devices in separate incidents in southern Afghanistan.
About 1000 people have been killed in militant-related violence in Afghanistan so far this year, compared with 850 in 2004.

Egyptian police clash with gunmen in Sinai
Egyptian security forces besieging four areas in the northern Sinai Peninsula clashed with gunmen early Wednesday, arresting 26 people during a massive search for suspects linked to several recent bombings in the rugged region, police officials said.
Some 4,000 security personnel, bolstered by armored vehicles, have been scouring the Sinai's desert plains and soaring mountains during the week searching for terrorists involved in the July 23 Sharm el-Sheik bombings, which killed at least 64 people, and the Oct. 7 attack on a hotel in Taba and a nearby beach camp. More than 30 died in those attacks.
Wednesday's shootout took place in four areas close to the Israeli border as police tried to storm hideouts of gunmen suspected of having links to the Sinai bombings, at least two police officials said on condition of anonymity as they were unauthorized to speak to the media.
"There was strong resistance but the security forces are executing the operation as planned," said one of the officials.
Three security men were wounded Wednesday in a land mine explosion in Qusaima, one of four mountainous areas surrounded by the forces about 20 kilometers (12 miles) west of the Israeli border, the official said. The mine was believed to have been left in the area for at least two decades since the Arab-Israeli wars.
Another official said some 650 suspects have been arrested in Sinai since the search started Monday. Most of the arrests took place in el-Arish on the Mediterranean coast in northern Sinai.
Meanwhile, Egypt's state-run Al Ahram newspaper reported Wednesday that police have arrested 20 people who might have had a direct links to the recent attacks.
Citing unidentified security officials, the paper said investigators believe they have netted the leaders of the terror cell that planned the attacks. No further details were provided and officials were not immediately available for comment on the report.
Marines hunt for Sayyaf remnants (Philippines)

The military has sent in 400 soldiers to deliver the crushing blow to the Abu Sayyaf forces in Mindanao.
Yesterday, a battalion-size elite Marine contingent composed of at least 400 troops were deployed to Western Mindanao to accomplish only one mission: wipe out the Al Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf headed by the elusive Khadaffy Janjalani.
“We will adjust accordingly. We’ll improve our capabilities, our support and our systems (against terrorism),” Armed Forces chief of staff Lt. Gen. Generoso Senga told reporters. “What we are trying to do is to further our capabilities, our armaments, the training capacities and training level of our soldiers.”
The 400 Marines who compose the Marine Battalion Landing Team 1 (MBLT-1), led by Lt. Col. Elvin Hermogino, were given send-off rites at Navy headquarters in Manila.
“They (MBLT-1) will be used against the Abu Sayyaf,” Navy spokesperson Capt. Geronimo Malabanan said in a phone interview.
The islands of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi on the southwestern tip of the Philippines are known bailiwicks of the Abu Sayyaf, who claimed responsibility for recent terrorist attacks in the country, with the help of the Southeast Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah.
The MBLT-1 will replace the MBLT-2, which will be shipped back to Marines headquarters in Ternate, Cavite for retraining.
Senga vowed an intensified antiterrorism campaign when he assumed the military’s top post last July 15.
Latest intelligence estimates placed the strength of the Abu Sayyaf at 500, augmented by some 30 JI fighters.
Two weeks ago, National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said that 10 JI suicide bombers — two of them in Metro Manila — have been scouting for targets.
Hizbul terrorist killed in J&K, explosives seized
A Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist was killed and nine people, including four security personnel, injured as terrorists carried out a grenade attack in Jammu & Kashmir, where police seized about 25 quintals (2500kg) of explosives from a godown (warehouse) of a private company and arrested two terrorists since Tuesday night.
The explosives concealed in 14 bags and seven drums were recovered by special operation group of police from the godown in downtown Srinagar in a pre-dawn operation on Wednesday, a police spokesman said.
The owner of the company, Javid Ahmad Ganai of Rajourikadal has been arrested.
Official sources said the seized explosive weighed about 25 quintals but it was not immediately clear whether the explosive was RDX, mostly being used by terrorists in the Valley. Samples have been sent to forensic laboratory to determine the quality of the seized explosive.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, KH Lohia refused to divulge details of the recovery saying it would hamper the investigations.
It was not immediately known whether the explosives were transported to the Valley from outside or were being smuggled out of Kashmir. The arrested persons are being questioned.
In another operation, the spokesman said a hardcore Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist identified as Gulzar Ahmad was killed by the troops of Rashtriya Rifles in an encounter at Wasoora village in Pulwama district late Tuesday night.
FBI Eyeing Islamic Author

The activities of a Garden Grove grocery store owner, who has been identified as the U.S. leader of a little-known radical Islamic group, are under scrutiny by the FBI, an agency spokeswoman said.
Iyad K. Hilal, an Islamic author and philosopher, has lived in Orange County for more than a decade with little attention to his writings or his role in the group.

The Orange County businessman is apparently not suspected of any terrorist acts, but local FBI terrorism investigators have launched an inquiry into the activities of him and his group. An FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles, Cathy Viray, declined to call it an investigation but confirmed that "we're looking into the matter." She declined to comment further.
Coalition forces capture terrorist, destroy hide-out
Coalition forces captured a known Al Qaeda-in-Iraq member, two suspected terrorists and destroyed a terrorist sanctuary, weapons and equipment near Al Asad Aug. 23.
Acting on tips from local Iraqis, Coalition forces raided the hide-out and confirmed that the location was being used by the terrorist to facilitate weapons and vehicle borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) operations.
After he was captured, the Al Qaeda-in-Iraq member provided information about related terrorist activity in the area. Based upon this information, Coalition forces captured two suspected terrorists. Coalition forces also captured and destroyed a VBIED and two weapons caches consisting of mortars, rockets and rocket propelled grenades.

Iraqi Army takes over Coalition Forces camp
Coalition forces turned over Camp Zulu in As Suwayrah, Iraq, to the Iraqi Army Aug. 21.
This is the first coalition forces camp within the Multi-National Division Central’s South area of responsibility to be turned over to Iraq’s 8th Division. The division’s 3rd Battalion, 3rd Brigade will be permanently housed there.

The squashing of terrorists in Ahfganistan is also welcome news because the same lefties keep claiming the Taliban is making a come back. It is almost like they are cheering against us.
