On pain's trail [fibromyalgia]
Los Angeles Times ^ | August 22, 2005 | Shari Roan

Exploring fibromyalgia's mysteries, researchers look to the central nervous system, gaining deeper insight into why we suffer.

...A groundswell of research has begun to expose the underpinnings of the baffling disorder that affects an estimated 6 million to 10 million Americans, most of them women. Not only do the findings have the potential to ease the condition's stigma, they also may provide clues to other illnesses for which there is no clear clause.

Fibromyalgia, experts now believe, is a pain-processing disorder — arising in the brain and spinal cord — that disrupts the ways the body perceives and communicates pain.

..arising in the brain...

Vindication at last all those doctors who told patients "It's all in your head."

I know several women who suffer from this, and am so glad to see that it is finally being taken seriously.

I was diagnosed with this about 5 yrs ago. IMHO it's just a place to dump the unknowns of common aches and pains and another reason to prescribe lifelong drugs.

Is anyone familiar with the work of John Lowe, D.C.? It is worthwhile checking out his website (www.drlowe.com). He has written a massive tome, "The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia," in which he states that fibromyalgia is, for the most part, a manifestation of hypothyroidism (or under-treated hypothyroidism). I recommend his work (and his site) to all.

Best,

es

Guaifenesin is the cure.

Not everyone appears to agree.

I tried Guaifenesin and the pain in my knees is gone. Shoulder pain also. It was not arthritis but unspecified joint pain.

I take 2 to 4 tablets a day.

Available over the counter at Wal-Mart for $8.50 per bottle of 20 caps brand name - Musinex.

Having nerve pain is a horrible problem to deal with.I damaged my ulnar nerve, otherwise known as the funny-bone and had surgery to fix it five years ago.The surgery was a breeze but it failed to stop my forearm and hand from feeling cold all the time with needles sticking in it.I either have to continue to live with it or I can try another surgery that moves the nerve to a different location.I can definitely relate to what these people are going through after having to deal with this.

I read the article at the link you provided and found it interesting but it brings up another question to me. The article mention kava kava. I haven't seen that on the market in a long time. Do you know if it was removed and if so, what was the reason?

This is very important. I want to send this to Father Vincent. Maybe it can be of some help to him.
