The U.S. is China's biggest market.

Crippling the ability of Americans to buy Chinese-made goods damage the Chinese economy.

Hugo's economy will tank, perhaps even before that. In fact, I think it's tanking even now.

I suspect that this is just bluster, as his own generals would dust him before they let him do something this stupid.

OK Master Rove - time for you to crank up your secret weather control machine and target Venezuela for massive drought.

Remember the good ol' days when the CIA actually supported American interests. Chavez would join his idol Che in that communist utopia in the sky.

Ah, yes...I wax nostalgic for the good ol' days when someone like Chavez would've been "dealt with" appropriately. I miss the Cold War bipolar world.

** DOES THE WASHINGTON GOVERNMENT, (if we still have one) REALIZE the time has come to position the U.S. so that we are not going to be BLACKMAILED and THREATENED by every anti-American maggot supplying us oil ????

Hello ANWAR, hello offshore drilling expansion, hello Washington ???? Hello ???

No need for Rove or anybody here to do anything.

We can sit back and watch as Hugo turns Venezuela into another Cuba.

No more hot and cold running water.

No more parts for cars.

No more medical technology.

No more technology at all.

And we can start drilling ANWAR, which should easily hold us out until Venezuela collapses and Hugo's generals do what South American generals do best.

Yawn...this two-bit simpleton has been threatening "no more oil" since the attempted coup...if he stopped selling us oil, his already third world hell hole of an economy would dip further into oblivion.

He is simply trying to look tough and his message is meant for his own pverty stricken people, not us.

Exactly...if he stops selling us oil (he won't), we will simply purchase more from Mexico or Saudi Arabia...Venezuela does not hold all the cards. He is trying to stir up anti-americanism among his people, so they won't dwell on the fact they live in squalor and abject poverty.

The Venezuelan middle class already failed once to topple Chavez, but they came close. If he cuts the US off from Venezuelan oil, they won't fail again. He'll end up hanging Mussolini style in the Caracas city square.

Agree... This is a meaningless publicity stunt (Look at me! Look at me!). Oil is fungible. If he says no to exports to US he has to either withhold what he exports to the US from the market which drives up the world wide price and hurts the US and everyone else but also would devastate the Venezuelan economy. Or, he sells Venezuelan oil to anyone but the US... since he must find buyers he is creating a de facto buyers market which will require him to discount his price. A short term effect on the US but once prices stabilize Chavez will have succeed only in reducing revenues from crude sales to his country...

There is one world price for oil. Chavez can ship wherever he wants; we'll buy from the international markets, and tankers will move from port to port. Prices will remain the same.

Ding, Ding, Ding.......we have a winner!
Oil is fungible, this is a symbolic gesture only.

Good to know. I figured it was a statement meant for his own people, and not us.

Great minds think alike.....heh heh.

We could easily fix his little red wagon by putting several war ships off his coast and not let him sell his oil to anyone.
The collapse of his regime would be almost immediate.

Spot on. Chavass (no typo) can embargo to his heart's content, and it won't affect diddly-boo. Who's going to refine that sludgy Orinoco sour crap, Hugo old boy? Not your buddies the ChiComs, mate; they can process 150K bbl/day max.
