ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A man who kicked out a window to escape from a state trooper's patrol car was found dead in a lake less than a mile away.
The body of Nicholas A. Hill, 20, was discovered Sunday at Nancy Lake, his hands still cuffed behind his back, said Trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson.
Hill flagged down a trooper late Tuesday after he had car problems. The trooper arrested him after he ran his ID and discovered Hill was wanted for allegedly missing a court date on an underage drinking charge.
The officer later stopped at an accident scene. When he returned he found that Hill had kicked out a window from the back seat and wriggled out.
Troopers said they had not determined if Hill intentionally or accidentally entered the lake. An autopsy was planned.

His thought process reconstructed:
"I'm handcuffed. It's dark. I'm in Alaska. If I were to escape and wander out into the wasteland, I could get into real trouble. Lost on some frozen lake, I could easily die. But, hey, it's August! There's no frozen lake out there! If there was ever a time to kick out the window and escape, this is it! What could go wrong?"

So, some twenty-yo kidd dies...
When I was 20, the age of drinking was 18.
Now, I admit, this kid died in some sort of darwin scenario...
But would it have been so hard to leave him alone?

Houdini had trouble swimming with his hands handcuffed, too.

Jack LaLaine, he ain't...or wasn't. Whatever.
(If anyone doesn't know the reference, Jack swam handcuffed from Alcatraz to San Francisco; and also, IIRC, swam the Golden Gate in cuffs.)

Ditto. Pretty soon anyone with a pop-top from a Budweiser in their car will be a felon.

Local TV have it that a large hornets nest is in the area where the kid took a dive.
Speculation has it he was beating feet down the railroad tracks and ran smack into a hornets nest, stung (and possible blind) he turned away from the attack and landed in the lake.
Troopers looking to recover the body was stung, and finally had to go recover from lakeside.
Don't understand why he had not wiggled the cuffs up front.
Bummer for the family, but he make his choices, and in this case, he got to pay the price.
