A lieutenant of al-Qaeda terror boss Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed by Iraqi security forces in Mosul, the US military said.

Mohammed Salah Sultan, also known as Abu Zubair, was killed on Friday, the US statement said.

The statement said Abu Zubair was a "known member of al-Qaeda in Iraq" and an al-Zarqawi lieutenant who was sought for his role in a July suicide bombing of a police station in Mosul in which five Iraqi police were killed.

Abu Zubair was wearing a suicide pack with explosives when he was killed, the US statement said.

"He was also suspected of resourcing and facilitating suicide bomber attacks against coalition, Iraqi security forces and Iraqi citizens throughout the country," the statement said.

The statement said that last week, US and Iraqi forces captured three bomb makers and six foreign fighters as well as finding and clearing 101 improvised explosive devices in the Mosul area.

Are there any AQs that aren't leaders or lieutenants?

Great for the Iraqis! The bomb-makers should be there when their creations are exploded. Bury them in pork fat!

This is great news and the fact theuy found so many bombs and bomb factories means less military and civilian casualties in the area.

Just once, I would like to hear that these people in these bomb factories are brought to justice, by this I mean executed.

Great another lieutenant, I will be happy when they start killing the AQ Majors and Colonels, or even better the man himself.

AWRIGHT, good news!

At first I thought it said they'd killed Al Zaquawri himself, rats! I look forward to that day, and hope it's Iraquis who bring him to justice, too.

This sounds significant.

Well, we got al-Libbi a couple months ago, I guess he would count as a four star general. Bin Laden would be alot like the President and Zawhari the VP. And, I guess Zarqawi would be like Tony Blair, but with an army just as big if not bigger then Bin Laden's.

There are a lot of things happening in Mosul we never read about. Did anyone see this dispatch from Michael Yon's great site?:

Like the time when some ISF [Iraqi Security Forces] were driving and got blasted by an IED, causing numerous casualties and preventing them from recovering the vehicle. The terrorists came out and did their rifle-pumping-in-the-air thing, shooting AKs, dancing around like monkeys. Videos went 'round the world, making it appear the terrorists were running Mosul, which was pretty much what was being reported at the time.

But that wasn't the whole story. In the Yarmuk neighborhood, only terrorists openly carry AK-47s. The lawyers call this "Hostile Intent". The soldiers call this "Dead Man Walking".

Deuce Four is an overwhelmingly aggressive and effective unit, and they believe the best defense is a dead enemy. They are constantly thinking up innovative, unique, and effective ways to kill or capture the enemy; proactive not reactive. They planned an operation with snipers, making it appear that an ISF vehicle had been attacked, complete with explosives and flash-bang grenades to simulate the IED. The simulated casualty evacuation of sand dummies completed the ruse.

The Deuce Four soldiers left quickly with the "casualties," "abandoning" the burning truck in the traffic circle. The enemy took the bait. Terrorists came out and started with the AK-rifle-monkey-pump, shooting into the truck, their own video crews capturing the moment of glory. That's when the American snipers opened fire and killed everybody with a weapon. Until now, only insiders knew about the AK-monkey-pumpers smack-down.

Why would a high ranking al-Qaeda leader be wearing a suicide pack?

No it doesn't. He might have led us to others, like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed did.

I hope it is the Iraqi's and not us who get him. That way our guys won't be scrutinized by liberal senators on how his rights were violated. The Iraqi's can just cut the sucker.
