Warming hits 'tipping point' (sky is falling, folks)

Siberia feels the heat. It's a frozen peat bog the size of France and Germany combined, contains billions of tonnes of greenhouse gas and, for the first time since the ice age, it is melting.

Do they mean to say that it has been getting warmer on earth since the last ice age? Fancy that.

Just wait and see... this is going to be an unusually harsh winter in Siberia... The permafrost will be restored, global freezing will be the joke du jour in conservative circles.

New York City will naturally get off with a light winter's touch. It will snow again in South Texas...

And I'm going to win the lottery in Hawaii...

Oh yeah, no lottery in Hawaii.

Since things are apparently getting worse on a weekly basis, it's safe to assume that within a year or two the catastrophe will be here.

Hmm, seems we'll have ideal conditions for pot plants. Silver lining in every cloud. You know, if life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

"When you start messing around with these natural systems, you can end up in situations where it's unstoppable. There are no brakes you can apply," said David Viner, a senior scientist at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.

Finally, they admit there's nothing we can do to change it. No need for Kyoto.

I always enjoy these articles.

I find it quite amusing that grown up people actually write this balderdash and people with functioning brains believe it.

Wait until this Winter and record low temperatures. The cause: global warming.

I just wish the entire topic had not been politicized. Rather listen to scientists on the subject than politicians.

My parents were married in 1932 and that was one of the coldest winters of the 20th century. They also often talked about the horrible summers of the "Dust-Bowl" 1932, 1933 and 1934 when the heat was boiling and there was no rain. Many days the sun didn't shine because of the black sky from the dust storms. Some people predicted a death of the central US.

Since the 30's we have only had more "green-house-gases" yet we don't have such bad drought and heat. Most of my life from the 60's to 90's they talked about global cooling. Maybe it is just weather?

Okay... now that we have proof that the world is ending, I'm putting out a desperate plea to the women of FR. Don't let me die a lonely man!

[crickets]

Dang... it always seems to work at the global warming rallies.

BTW - Who defines what the optimal temperture of the planet is? Are they just measuring what it was at the point they began measuring? Why is temp x better or worse than temp x + 1?

Nature is an ever changing system. One volcano spews more nasty stuff into the air in one instant than mankind could if they tried. Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano a Big Polluter

Nature adapts. If it didn't we would not exist after a single northern winter.

They are playing to the people who don't know the difference between climate and weather.

Makes one wonder how many of the scientists and writers know the difference.

Now, more than ever, we have a compelling reason to develop and apply all the engineering and technology necessary to extract Methane Hydrate. There is talk that it may be a decade or more before the methods are economically viable, but a crash program to speed up the extraction and processing of Methane Hydrate would seem to be an excellent middle-range project to protect the world's economy while this period of transition is going on.

There shall always be plenty of demand for petroleum, as feedstock for many industries other than the production of motor fuel. Most internal-combustion engines, whether spark-ignition or Diesel, run perfectly well on methane, or with the knowledge we have of chemical engineering, some tailor-made fuels can be reformulated out of methane, with ZERO sulfur emissions and clean-burning, no particulates at all.

In fact, switching from pumping petroleum out of the ground to harvesting of Methane Hydrate from the Arctic regions may well result in PREVENTING future global warming. There is strong reason to believe that rapid global warming in past millenia was due to widespread release of methane into the atmosphere, due to the warming of the deposits of Methane Hydrate in permafrost and in ocean water at depths greater than 1,500 feet, causing Methane Hydrate to go through phase change. This sudden release of methane is believed to be one of the phenomena that contributes to sudden "white squalls" or mystery disappearances of boats and planes over the "Bermuda Triangle".

Controlled harvest of Methane Hydrate could well PREVENT these eruptions and the consequences. Of course, there is also the potential for even greater mischief to be carried out in the deliberate release of Methane Hydrate.
