Bakersfield leads call of the right
The Bakersfield Californian ^ | Thursday August 11th, 2005, 10:45 PM | GRETCHEN WENNER

When Trice Harvey heard a new study ranks Bakersfield the eighth most conservative city in America -- just behind Gilbert, Ariz. -- he sighed.

"I'm a little bit disappointed we got seven people ahead of us," said the former county supervisor and Republican state assemblyman. "I got work to do, I guess."

Bakersfield earned the top conservative spot in California, outflanking Orange, which scored 10th in the study released Thursday by the Bay Area Center for Voting Research.

...

Kathleen Faulkner, a Bakersfield attorney whose liberal credentials include an ACLU sticker in her office window, also sighed when hearing the news.

"I'm surprised (we're) not No. 1," Faulkner said.

When asked why a a bona fide left-winger would live here, Faulkner said she's asked herself that many times.

...

Bakersfield's liberals help balance the right-leaning community, she said, adding: "I decided to stay here and make everybody miserable."

...

While the group has studied Bay Area voting trends for some time, this is its first national effort. The study claims liberal cities tend to be those with large black populations.

Gene Tackett, a local political analyst, said Bakersfield's demographics don't really support the report's premise that conservative cities have "extremely low numbers" of black residents.

...

"They did a survey of how people vote," Tackett said. "I don't think there's any surprise to anybody that Bakersfield is a conservative town and votes for conservative candidates."

CSI:BAKERSFIELD is, I believe, scheduled to begin in 2010.

5 or 10 years ago, had this survey been around, Bakersfield would have rated much higher on this list.

No real surprises there on that list, except that Berserkely actually got outflanked on the left by two cities.

For a real treat, look at those lists, and examine the relative economic and social health of the cities. The conservative cities are, for the most part, clean, growing, strong economically, and vibrant overall. Oh, sure, the hoi palloi wouldn't be caught DEAD in Provo or Lubbock or Abilene or Bakersfield or Lafayette--too hard to get good sushi, and the provincials just have NO sense of fashion--but who cares? Flyover country is where the real America is, and it's where this country's strength is derived from.

Compare that with the liberal list. Detroit is Fallujah North. Gary has been circling the toilet for, what, forty years now? Washington, DC has large areas that require armed convoys and attack helicopters to enter after dark. Flint is an economic disaster area and Mikey Moore's hometown.

See a pattern developing?
