House wants to know about data-mining WASHINGTON, July 24 (UPI) -- The Bush Administration is now opposing part of the anti-terrorism legislation it had been lobbying Congress to reauthorize.

A recent amendment to the USA Patriot Act requires the Justice Department to give an annual report to Congress about its data-mining efforts -- attempts to use existing databases to hunt for characteristic behavior of terrorists. Officials in the department say it would take away valuable time.

Able Agent used sophisticated data mining techniques. So, I have been curious about the data mining end of this story. For example, what data-sets were being used to profile possible terrorist activities, etc. Fascinating topic. Also, why is the administration now opposing data mining efforts... Someone please help with this story.... I just don't have the time to pursue this!

The article tells what you need to know. The administration isn't against data mining. They are against having to report their data mining activities to Congress every year.

Oversight is a two -edged sword. Protection of liberties is laudable. The downside is that in this highly politicized environment, self-defeating leaks by folks with hidden agendas are inevitable. Loose lips sink ships.

Sounds like a potential Gorelick-Atta-Clinton-gate all over again.

Terrorists and spies now have Civil Liberties, even when data is "Open-sourced." (Open sourced = Requires no search warrant.)

Learn at least the lessons of recent history, you bozos (n Congress)!
Like Curt Weldon recommends we do.
