The sources said they think the woman was not a subordinate of Gen. Byrnes at U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va.

Is it Valerie Plame?

Gen. Weasely Clark comes to mind.

Why did Clinton fire Clark?

SURE!!

What is extraordinary about this case is the fact he is a 4 star Gen. The Army does not make dummys 4 star Generals.

During my career, I have met 2 four star Generals, and both were superior in memory and intellect.

E-mail coming at ya about another General relieved years ago. Kinda funny.

Is it unusual that he finished OCS & got a commission six years before completing a BA?

As Kramer would have said to George's dad, the Korean War Vet and cook, "It was a crazy time."

I was commissioned the same year as Byrnes (69) and didn't go to degree completion until 75/76.

Because even Clinton couldn't overlook Clark's gross incompetence. He was a disaster as an officer and if ever elected or appointed to a national leadership position, will be an even greater disaster as he wouldn't be restrained from running his cake hole the way commissioned officers are.

I've never been able to get it out of my head that General Hugh Shelton possibly gave Cohen and Clinton an ultimatum over Wesley.

So a four star general is fired for having an affair.

But Clinton wasn't removed for that and worse.

One more middle-aged man who can't keep his pants zipped up. What is it about men of that age group that makes they throw away a lifetime of achievement for a sex romp with someone else's wife or daughter?

It's usually more than this, this is just what they got him on and releasing to the public........unless, there are NUMEROUS complaints and the complainants are about to go public....I never believe these first releases by the military.

Well, you've just reaffirmed the superiority of men. That is unless you also think that the unnamed woman may have had something to do with an extramarital affair?

I've been thinking about that all morning. This may have something to do with the war going on in the Pentagon.

"It was a crazy time."

I figured since this happened during Vietnam, and the draft, it was a case of leadership trumps degree. Those are not mutually exclusive, but one doesn't guarantee the other.

I don't know what it is, but I'd bet, there's something else behind this....or he could have had a long history of fraternization and it's about to blow up in their faces.

I'm sure President Bush approved of this firing. Under Clinton, Byrnes would have kept his job.

Under Clinton Byrnes would have been promoted.

Let me tell you how crazy it was. As I was getting ready to leave Ft. Knox for Embry-Riddle, I made a trip to Daytona Beach to find a place for my family to stay for a year. This was 75, mind you. The Army had gone through a massive RIF in 73 and another more selective one had just been announced in 75. They both hit the Captain ranks hard. An Infantry Captain at E-R, who was just completing a two year degree program, told me about two of his friends who were doing the same thing at Tampa. Both were being RIF'd. Both had been to the year long Infantry Officer Advanced Course before attending a fully funded two year degree completion program. They obviously took their $15,000 and went on their way. These were not isolated cases and it appeared that one of the Army's hands didn't know what the other one was doing. I watched the Army lose a lot of good people.

A few years later I worked for a scumbag who had made Major without a degree. He received his second pass-over for LTC and got lost in the mountains somewhere for about 45 days. This allowed him to get within the 18 year gate before he was officially notified of the pass over. He beat the system and retired a Major.

Is he forced to retire with the increased rank money intact? Tough life huh.

He will likely be forced to retire, but not at the four-star rank. The SecDef is required by law to certify that all 3-star and 4-star officers have served admirably to retire at those ranks. Those who retire under a cloud such as this are retired as 2-star generals. (It doesn't mean that much of a reduction in retired pay though. But it will likely keep Byrne from landing many consulting jobs -- except with the Clinton News Network. And the Pink Network.)

The General running Aberdeen Proving Ground was relieved of his command several years ago. The military instituted an 800 number hotline for sexual abuse and sure enough it caught the general.
