"Everyone knows the famous WWII photo of the Marines raising the U.S. Flag on Iwo Jima, and most Freepers probably also know that photo was somewhat choreographed, perhaps the flag was even raised several times to get just the right shot. "
not quite
the famous raising was the second actual flag raising on MT Suribachi - the first was a temporary raising to let other units that a US unit had gotten a toehold
the second and photographed raising was not choreographed as it was just a photographer who just starting shooting a ton of pics as they raised this second flag. combo of luck and timing

Ok, the "famous" raising, was actually the second...the first was just temporary...? Look, if they had one to begin with and had the luxury of placing a second one with a half-dozen Marines, that's choregraphed. I'm sure that everyone knows that the first one was actually a much smaller flag. Replacing it with a larger one--is choreography, it's staged, it's planned--whatever you want to call it.

Don't get me wrong, in no way does it diminish the acts of bravery of those Marines.
