If my firm knew I was opposed to a thing, and some pro bonoe work was needed, they might ask me to be the hostile opposition -- knowing that no one could do it better than I. And I'd welcome the opportunity.

Only if you prized your ego more than your common sense. Far better to let Scalia make mincemeat of them, unawares.

Actually, I don't want Roberts' kids dragged into this. In summarizing my discomfort with him, I was only trying to suggest that, to me, his personal history and resumè seem too contrived. When you read the accounts of people who worked with him, even back at Harvard, they have no indication as to his political leanings, which is just kind of strange, especially in such a politicized environment.
That's why I compared my feelings about him to the way I feel about Tom Cruise and his over-the-top performance declaring his feelings for what's-her-name. There is just something fake about it. This smart, handsome kinda guy doesn't get married until he's 41 years old, has two adopted kids from a Central American country who just happen to blonde and blue-eyed, and his wife, whose demeanor in the publicity photos make her look distant and disengaged, just doesn't add up for me as being genuine. Maybe it isn't fair to express this impression, but that is the way I feel about him. Like he's too put together to be trusted in such an important position where conservatives have to depend on him.

I say we trust the President on this one.

We can't even trust him to fully respect the First Amendment and to tell Big Stupid Government growth to F off.

I smell Souter.

I wanna know how Roberts feels about these issues.

Therefore, you're playing right into the Dims' hands, by asking a prospective Justice of the Supreme Court to prejudge cases that could show up before him on the Court, and give them the talking points they want in order to try to prevent a good man from joining the Court. In essence, you, by your insistence on knowing how Roberts "feels" about these issues, are making sure the Dims will continue to get the Justices they want, who will continue to legislate from the bench, by using their feelings.

I don't know how Roberts "feels" about the issues, and I DON'T want to know, because Justices of the Supreme Court are NOT supposed to use their feelings, or foreign nations' laws, or precedents to decide cases. Their one and only job is to decide cases on one basis only...the Constitution of the United States. Their "feelings" don't matter. Other nations' laws don't matter. Precedents should not matter, otherwise the Dredd Scott case would still rule our racial relations.

But you only want to know how he feels, playing right out of the Liberals' playbook.

And, in case you have missed it, he's already given us hints of how he "feels" in those matters you hold most important (I love God -family and country in that order.) By the way, I don't care if you're a Republican or not...as far as I know, you could be a Libertarian, though I doubt it, by your insistence on knowing how Roberts "feels." When you ask for things that the Libs themselves ask for, you're acting like a liberal, and you become a RINO, or a LINO, or even an IINO, and your handle (democratstomper) becomes only a play on words.

The President has placed Roberts name for nomination. It would be a tragic mistake to withdraw it.

Unless something bigger than this comes up, I think I'm going to trust the President.

And pray.

...if this issue were really defining Roberts, all the Dems/liberals would be welcoming him with open arms. Are they?

An excellent point. In fact, they were until late today attempting to portray Roberts as an advocate of abortion clinic bombings until NARAL was shamed into pulling the ad. I said it before: the nuts are falling from the trees on both sides of the road here.

I have every right to be suspicious.

Yes, you do. In the end, we're all going to have to make our own personal decision on where to stand on this.

I dont know about you - but i need something concrete to base my support on, the difference between liberals and conservatives is they (libs) rely on feelings, were we really on fact.

You say you need "something concrete" to base your support on, and yet you ask to know how Roberts "feels" about the issues...don't you get it?? You are playing it straight from the Libs playbook! I return you to your own statement "the difference between liberals and conservatives is they (libs) rely on feelings, were we really on fact". You are acting like a Lib, and asking Roberts to fall for the classic Lib trap. How you "feel" about something can vary from one moment to the next, depending on very many factors...what you THINK, however, tends to be consistent, which is why we conservatives tend to be more morally consistent than Libs can ever dream of being. I hate to tell you, but for once Ann Coulter is wrong...she's making the mistake so many of us in the conservative arena make, of being "single-issue" voters. Don't make that mistake.
