State Senate leader Don Perata has incurred legal costs averaging $116,000 per month to defend against an FBI inquiry into whether he received outside income for legislative work, according to records released Monday.
The Oakland Democrat remained $260,000 in debt as of June 30 despite raising $322,000 from longtime campaign contributors since establishing his defense fund in February, according to campaign finance reports filed with the secretary of state's office.
One of the Senate president pro tem's two largest donors was Sacramento developer Angelo Tsakopoulos, who gave $50,000 to the legal fund in June. Tsakopoulos was outside the United States on Monday and unavailable for comment, said Steve Capps, a spokesman for AKT Development.
Earlier this year, federal investigators requested copies of all e-mails sent by Perata and eight legislative staff members during his first six years in the Senate, according to a subpoena released in May.
An Oakland-based federal grand jury last year launched a probe into private business dealings involving Perata and his political friends, family and campaign contributors. FBI agents raided the homes of Perata and his son, Nick, in December.
Perata spokesman Jason Kinney said the investigation is "a mile wide and an inch deep," requiring a legal effort to prepare for any contingency.
"We're anticipating the best but are preparing for every possible outcome," Kinney said. "That's what good legal defense efforts do."

I would ask the FBI to issue a report a few days before the special election, if we have one that is, so we could get a Grand Jury looking into indicting Don for Xmas. :)
Maybe the LA Times will just a few days prior...oh, wait, he's a dem......
So we walked a couple of blocks to the Crapitol. My longtime friend, State Senator Dave Cox (Republican Minority Leader) just happened to be in his office and took us into the Senate chambers and had his staffer take pictures which he later emailed to us.
While we were mugging for the camera, in walked ol pistol packin Perata (Dem Majority Leader) and of course Dave just had to introduce us. So we were practically forced to shake his hand. I couldn't wait to get to the men's room afterward to wash up!!!
Being civil and polite to criminals is such difficult duty!!! Yuck!!!
Anyway, my grand daughter was so disappointed she didn't git ta meet the terminator! Got her picture taken with the CHP dude in front of the Governor's office.
