The Houston Fire Department's Hazardous Materials team shut down a section of a baggage claim area at Bush Intercontinental Airport Saturday night because of smoking luggage left on a baggage carousel, officials said.
It turned out to be caused by an aerosol can of cooking spray.
Airport spokesman Roger Smith said late Saturday that the luggage was left behind on a baggage carousel used for Continental Flight 51, which originated in Newark, N.J., and arrived about 9 p.m.
When no one picked up the bag, it was "taken to one of those offices where they take unclaimed bags," Smith said.
"Someone in that office then noticed the smoke coming from the bag, and they called the appropriate police and fire personnel."
"The contents of the bag shifted and the top of the can was depressed, so all of the cooking spray emptied inside the bag," Smith said. "So that's how it ends."
I wonder why no one picked up the bag.
Hey Carlo! did you forget something?
ping to false alarm.
"I wonder why no one picked up the bag."
THAT is a very good question.
I'd assume this would be a banned item. I don't know if the container contained more that the authorized limit.
Other Categories of Banned or Hazardous Items
* Gases and Pressurized Containers
* Personal care items containing flammable perfume, aerosols, or other hazardous material may be carried on board if each container is less than 16 fluid ounces (473 ml) and the total is less than 70 fluid ounces (2.07 liters).
I would assume that it would be a banned item, too.
Interesting. The bag with a wayward can of Pam was also the one with no owner.
Well the bag will be traced to someone. What might the passenger's name be... Betty Crocker? Rachael Ray? Achmed Mohammed?
Is hairspray banned?
I believe only on carry-on and not well screened.
Thanks for the info!
Perhaps an avid griller on vacation.
That's one hell of a STUPID item to bother to pack.

What an interesting site!
And such bargains!
I guess the same person who forgets to pick up their luggage!
LOL! I know some TSA and they have some strange stories too.
Like most of you know it was a TEST.
At least we found this one.
What if it were compressed gas with a little bio chemicals in the mix.
That must have been a heavy suitcase.
Very. But considering the tons of groceries I've toted into the house over the years...
