From Reuters:

US may sharply cut Iraq force within year -general

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States hopes to sharply reduce its forces in Iraq within the next year, its top commander on the ground said on Wednesday.

"I do believe that if the political process continues to go positively, if the developments with the (Iraqi) security forces continue to go as it is going, I do believe we will still be able to make fairly substantial reductions after these elections in the spring and summer of next year," General George Casey said at a briefing with visiting Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

If "speedy withdrawal" means 'get out by this date' then that's news. If "speedy withdrawal" still means 'get out whenever you feel the time is right, and hopefully that'll be quick' then whatever..

So the title seems intriguing, but the article that follows doesn't tell me anything new. (Not a poke at you, merely an observation.)

And if we set a date/timetable, then the terrorists have won.

Same here. The title told me that an unexpected situation arose, yet nothing new has actually occured.

Misleading Title Alert!

I agree. That's why I added the Reuters story.

Skynews had their "usual" big breaking news alert, whole screen turn red kinda thingie, and then just basically announced what is in the headline. Could mean a number of things.

Well, as they say at Sky: More to follow :-)

Cheers.

Except in the case of the reported Istanbul blast last night, nothing whatsoever followed, and the story dissapeared...

What, does the Iraqi PM think our soldiers LIKE being in his God-forsaken country just for the heck of it.

Certainly we'll get out quickly. Just as soon as his impatient, sorry ass is as safe as can be in this short time.

Well, here is a bit more flesh to the bone:

PM DEMANDS QUICK PULLOUT

Iraq's transitional prime minister has called for the speedy withdrawal of US troops, it has been reported.

Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari told a joint news conference with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld that the time has arrived to plan a coordinated transition from American to Iraqi military control throughout the country.

General George Casey, the top American commander in Iraq, he believed a US troop withdrawal could begin by spring 2006 if progress continues on the political front and if the insurgency does not expand.

Mr Rumsfeld however, when asked how soon a US withdrawal should happen, said no exact timetable had been set.

Mr Al-Jaafari said US training of Iraqi security forces must be speeded up.

Why isn't THIS on the top of the story? "Demands," my butt!

Worthless media. Long live FR!

A demand by Iraqi officials for a speedy withdrawal could be the covwer the admin wants to begin a withdrawal. After all we said we would withdraw when the Iraqi government asked us to. This could be an orchestrated political move to allow us to withdraw next year.

Dont shoot! Im just thinking out loud here!

Okay, at least the paras now match the title. But still nothing, IMHO, to justify this title. Iraqi wants to start planning, says U.S. needs to speed up training, SecDef says no timetable set.
