Poll: Liberals stop bleeding in Quebec

July 25, 2005

OTTAWA -- The federal Liberals have nearly doubled their support in Quebec in recent months -- and they would still be relegated to also-ran status in La Belle Province if a vote were held today.

Any public-opinion movement in Quebec is significant because several polls have suggested the Liberals could win a majority government if they rebuild their fortunes there.

A new Decima Research survey suggests the Liberals, who were in the mid-teens in April, have clawed back from rock bottom and now stand at 28 per cent in that province.

That's the good news for Quebec Liberals. The bad news for them -- and there's plenty of it -- is that the Bloc Quebecois remained 22 points ahead of the Grits at 50 per cent. The gap between the parties was even wider than when the Liberals got crushed in Quebec on election day 2004.

The Bloc took 54 of Quebec's 75 seats last year with a popular vote margin of 15 points -- 49 per cent Bloc, 34 Liberal.

The bright spot for the Liberals is that it appears the rebuilding process has begun, says Decima pollster Bruce Anderson.

"The Liberals maybe have a little more reason for optimism in these numbers," Anderson said in an interview.

"But the numbers overall still show there's a big climb for the Liberals, vis-a-vis the Bloc."

Nationally, the poll placed the Liberals at 39 per cent of decided voters, compared with 24 per cent for the Conservatives and 19 per cent for the NDP.

Anderson attributed two reasons to what he described as a slow, steady Liberal increase in Quebec.

A main reason is the end of the Gomery inquiry into the sponsorship scandal. The hearings became a cultural phenomenon that attracted huge ratings in Quebec. Testimony became lively fodder for broadcast talk shows and water-cooler conversation

The Liberals' Quebec cabinet lieutenant, Jean Lapierre, called it the Gomery "soap opera" that involved a cast of sponsorship characters like Jean Brault who became household names in the province.

The second reason for the Liberal climb back is a declining opinion of the Conservatives among federalist Quebecers, Anderson said.

He suggested the Tory stance against same-sex marriage might have left some Quebecers disenchanted with the party.

When the sponsorship scandal reached its peak in April, the Tories were rivalling the Liberals for popular support in Quebec.

But the Conservatives were at just eight per cent in the province. The NDP had nine per cent.

The Quebec results are based on three weeks of Decima polling of 3,000 Canadians that concluded July 17.

The national numbers are based on Decima's weekly national poll of 1,000 Canadians conducted July 14-17.

The national results are considered accurate within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Liberal polling firm. Poll manipulation. MSM scare tactics. Media firm owned by the Liberals (indirectly). I recently read this piece on some other board:

CTV drops Ipsos-Reid in favour of Liberal friendly polling company

The Strategic Council, CTV's new Liberal friendly polling company, released a follow-up poll tonight which revealed Canadians' distrust of the Harper "hidden agenda"...

BS poll from Liberal polling company

Ipsos-Reid released polling numbers today which showed the Conservatives still three points ahead of the Liberals but CTV ignored these numbers in favour of their new polling firm that provides numbers consistent with their agenda. Hey, when you have $3 billion dollars in media subsidies potentially on the line you can't tolerate poll results that don't suit your agenda.

This was on April 30, 2005. That was also about when we "peaked" and the Fiberals "rose" again. Coincidence? I think not!

Conspiracy theory alert!!!!!!!

They get billions of dollars in subsidies to produce "Canadian" (read: Liberal-friendly) documentaries, and they are governed by the CRTC, which is stacked and dominated by Liberals.
