A strong earthquake occurred at 08:51:49 (UTC) on Saturday, July 23, 2005. The magnitude 6.1 event has been located in the KERMADEC ISLANDS, NEW ZEALAND. The hypocentral depth was estimated to be 43 km (27 miles). (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

There are an average of 120 6.0-6.9 quakes every year, so a couple close together isn't very special at all.

"There are an average of 120 6.0-6.9 quakes every year, so a couple close together isn't very special at all." That is correct. My concerns was since the mega-9.5 of last winter, such a huge under-oceanic shift could produce interconnected jolts in other portions of the Ring of Fire.
