Sources: Classified Memo IDs Plame
cbsnews.com ^ | 7/21/05 | Gloria Borger

(CBS) There were new developments Thursday in the federal investigation of who leaked the identify of a CIA operative and blew her cover.

As CBS News Correspondent Gloria Borger reports, it turns out a key portion of a two-year-old State Department memo that is now at the center of the controversy was classified — and that could mean leaking it was a crime.

At the time the State Department wrote its memo, the administration's key rationale for war in Iraq was crumbling. No weapons of mass destruction had been found and some key intelligence used to make the administration's case had proven false. An internal war raged inside the administration over who was to blame.

The state department's 2003 memo was written to make one thing clear: don't blame us. But what now interests a federal grand jury is a single paragraph in that memo identifying "Valerie Wilson" as a CIA employee — and the wife of former ambassador Joe Wilson, who had gone to Africa to investigate Iraq's nuclear capability.

Who are these "legal experts"?

People who have been writing stories about the subject for 6 months. It's the same qualification for their aerospace "experts", military "experts", campaign "experts", environmental "experts", science "experts", etc. etc. etc.

Then, who from the State Department let it out?
This is going to hit Colin Powell. Hard.
When is he going to be called to testify?

Especially since the memo itself didn't even identify her as an undercover agent. Wes Pruden of the Washington Times had a pretty good column on this a few days ago... he commented that Valerie Plame's job at the CIA could have been very dangerous, even involving a stapler and a paste pot, or something to that effect. His point was that not every bureaucrat, even at the CIA, is a Super Duper Top Secret Agent.

Sounds like Gloria took her lessons from ole "Honeydipper" Dan Rather. She should remember how his skiffy career ended.

RED ALERT!!! NOVACK TOLD WILSON THAT HIS SOURCE FOR THE PLAME LEAK WAS IN THE CIA!!!!!

Sorry for caps but this info is huge and needs to be circulated far and wide. I had not looked at Wilson's book before tonight because I refused to give him my good money - I had relied only upon articles for info about this matter. But tonight I picked up a copy of Wilson's badly mis-titled "The Politics of Truth" in my local library and guess what hit me like a 2x4 across the forehead, on page 344:

[This is from a conversation dated July 10, 2003, just before Novack went to press with his article]:

"NOVACK...ASKED IF I WOULD CONFIRM WHAT HE HAD HEARD FROM A CIA SOURCE: THAT MY WIFE WORKED AT THE AGENCY."

This is proof that for the MSM, either no one has actually bothered to read Wilson's farcical book, OR, for those who have, they are consciously covering for Wilson's lies and depraved campaign against Rove et al.

Wilson's own book telling us that Novack stated on July 10, 2003 (before the #### really hit the fan) that his source saying Valerie Plame worked at the CIA was a CIA SOURCE ITSELF.

Hope the Independent Counsel has pursued this info, but does anyone know how to get this item before them???

seems I read on another thread that they use the full word secret not an s as to not misinterpret the importance. Seems logical and an s can mean alot of things.

I'd knock that Gloria B. flat on her big fat a$$!

She was smug and giggly at the end of the report as she was relating to SeeBS's John Roberts in studio. It was sickening. She looked like she was so proud of playing well for the "team" (SeeBS).

It all depends on the meaning of "s".

Sorry couldn't resist.

"experts say"....... "sources say" -- what's the difference? It means nothing!

How's that for down the middle, unbiased reporting?

The authorization for the use of force in Iraq listed 23 reasons. CBS picks #7 as the "key rationale for war". That is their opinion. It is strange to see such opinion in a "news" article. I prefer #10.

Whereas members of al Qaida, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq;

I thought it was interesting to read the thread about
her department being the ones that targeted the chinese
embassy during the bosnian war.

they just downloaded a targeting request from a pentagon
computer filled it out and sent it in!

vey interesting.

Was the memo printed with MS Word For Selectric Typewriters, too?

No, it was written using a Painstakingly Encrypted New Code Intellectual License. In other words, a pencil.

The DU Crowd be foamin at de mouth wid dis:

RAW STORY

Bloomberg News has slotted a story alleging that senior Bush advisor Karl Rove and Vice President Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff 'Scooter' Libby provided false testimony to the special prosecutor to a Washington-based grand jury, RAW STORY has been told.

Patrick Fitzgerald, the Chicago special prosecutor appointed to investigate the outing of former covert agent Valerie Plame Wilson, may also be looking at whether other crimes -- such as perjury, obstruction of justice or leaking classified information -- were committed.

It's breaking tonight or tomorrow AM, sources say. Bloomberg has been among the head of the pack in breaking elements of the CIA leak scandal; they recently hired former Wall Street Journal editor Al Hunt.>>>>snip

The story dovetails with an account provided by investigative blogger journalist Murray Waas earlier this week.

"White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove did not disclose that he had ever discussed CIA officer Valerie Plame with Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper during Rove's first interview with the FBI, according to legal sources with firsthand knowledge of the matter," Waas wrote.

"The omission by Rove created doubt for federal investigators, almost from the inception of their criminal probe into who leaked Plame's name to columnist Robert Novak," he continues, "as to whether Rove was withholding crucial information from them, and perhaps even misleading or lying to them, the sources said.">>>.snip

And the very last reason to go to war may have the longest lasting effect on world events. It may very well be W's legacy:

Whereas it is in the national security of the United States to restore international peace and security to the Persian Gulf region;

But that is my opinion. CBS is entitled to theirs. But it is inescapably inappropriate for CBS to put their opinions in news articles.
