ACLJ Calls John Roberts, Jr. - President Bush's Supreme Court Nominee - an "Exceptional" Choice Who Will Interpret the Constitution

July 19, 2005

(Washington, DC) – The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), specializing in constitutional law said today that John Roberts, Jr., the nominee named by President Bush for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States, is an exceptional choice who will bring sound legal reasoning to the high court.

“Judge Roberts is an exceptional choice who will bring sound legal reasoning to the Supreme Court of the United States,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, who argues regularly before the high court. “He was one of the most gifted advocates before the high court and has served with distinction on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. In my dealings with Judge Roberts over the years, I have found him to be a ‘lawyer’s lawyer’ exhibiting uncommon insight and judgment. A man of character, Judge Roberts understands the Constitution and has a record of applying the law – not legislating from the bench. He is extremely well suited and well qualified to serve this country on the nation’s highest court. We call on the Senate to begin the confirmation process and move swiftly to conduct fair hearings and to confirm this exceptional nominee.”

Sekulow, who argues frequently before the Supreme Court, said the ACLJ will begin mobilizing a national campaign to ensure that Judge Roberts is confirmed. Sekulow said he will generate support for the nominee through his daily radio broadcast that reaches 1.5 million listeners, through his weekly television show, by using direct mail, phone calls, and emails to a list approaching one million supporters.

“We are prepared for a very intense battle that is certain to begin immediately,” said Sekulow. “We already have experienced the obstructionist tactics used to keep President Bush’s federal appeals court nominees off the bench. This Supreme Court nomination represents the culmination of years of preparation and focus. And we are prepared to ensure that the Constitution is complied with in this confirmation battle. We support President Bush’s nominee and are launching a national campaign to ensure that the nominee is confirmed.”

Led by Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, the American Center for Law and Justice is based in Washington, D.C.

BULLETIN: President Bush Nominates Right-Wing John Roberts to Supreme Court(Oh No!)
 7/19/2005 | Feminist Majority Foundation

President Bush nominated DC Circuit Court Judge John Roberts to the US Supreme Court. The Feminist Majority, the National Organization for Women, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the National Abortion Federation all immediately announced their intentions to oppose Roberts for the position.

“I am extremely disappointed that the President did not appoint a centrist woman to fill Sandra Day O’Connor’s seat on the Supreme Court,” said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority. “We are now going back to tokenism for women on the highest court in the land.”

“Everything we know about Judge Roberts’ record thus far indicates that he will be a solid vote against women’s rights and Roe v. Wade,” Smeal continued. “If he is to be confirmed by senators who support women’s rights, he must say where he stands on Roe and the right to privacy. The burden is on him.”

This is a more detailed endorsement than what we've so far heard from Mark Levin, so it carries a lot more weight. I hope Ann Coulter will pay attention to these endorsements and adjust her opinion.

I am withholding judgment until the confirmation hearings. I want to hear what he has to say WRT faithfully interpreting the written Constitution. Any whiff of it being a living document, and I will oppose, FWIW.

Do you trust Jay Sekulow?...

He seems like a pretty good guy...however he has said some things I don't agree with (which is to say I am more conservative than Sekulow).

Still, his endorsement is encouraging.

Is there any reason to believe he will not uphold the 2nd Amendment? If he is a strict constructionist, a traditionalist and a conservative I would, by extension, be reasonably certain that he will be gun-friendly.

Do you know Jay Sekulow and his stands?...totally a constitutionalists...he'd NEVER endorse Judge Roberts, if he wasn't exactly the same. He'd be screaming his head off.

I hope Ann Coulter will pay attention to these endorsements and adjust her opinion.

This guy is NOT a Souter. He could (worst case scenario) be another Anthony Kennedy. But that would go for almost anybody.

I am impressed to see that his wife was actually the head of a pro-life group (albeit a feminist one). That is more than we could imagine of any president's wife since Pat Nixon (who was so low-profile I wouldn't know one way or the other.)

Let Ann vent, though. While I prefer her approach, it ain't W's style, and he never pretended it was. Frankly, I think it is good that SOME heat come from the right just to make it seem like Bush compromised.

Here's the genius of Bush's pick. When the inevitable rantly for a female comes along, Bush makes good on it next time by appointing Edith Jones. When the left gets completely in a tizzy, he can just respond, "Sheesh! Nothing makes you guys happy!"
