Killer used posh perfume in bomb
Herald Sun ^ | July 19, 2005

ONE of the London terrorists bought more than $2000 worth of designer perfume as a deadly napalm-style ingredient in the bombs.

Just three days before the carnage, Jamaican-born Jermaine Lindsay bought dozens of bottles of scent that investigators believe were to make the bombs more flammable.

They included Jean Paul Gaultier, Fahrenheit, Emporio Armani and Boss brands -- all symbols of what Islamist extremists consider the height of Western decadence.

Investigators believe the perfumes were used to maximise the number of burns victims in the attacks, which killed at least 55 people, including Australian Sam Ly.

"The active ingredient in any perfume is alcohol," said terror expert Dr Andrew Silke.

"The effect would be more incendiary, like napalm, rather than highly explosive. It would create more fire and therefore more burn injuries."

The revelation came as an Islamic bookshop emerged as the recruitment headquarters for the extremists.

The Iqra Learning Centre in Beeston, Leeds -- home suburb of two of the bombers -- has been revealed as a breeding ground for Islamist militants and a staging point for the London terrorists.

Bookshop owner Mohammad Tafazil is said to have hosted talks by militant Muslims.

Tafazil, 38, allegedly has financial links to the nearby Hamara Youth Centre, used by bomber Mohammad Khan as a terror recruitment centre.

Something here smells fishy - besides the perfume.

Alcohol is not that hard to come by, no reason to pay $2000.

(And why is that reported in dollars and not pounds or euros)?

Alcohol also burns with a lower temperature. Gasoline would have made a better choice for the aledged purpose of creating more burn victims.

If true, there is something else going on than flamability enhancement.

Wouldn't vodka have worked just as well?

No one said these guys were bright. They did not become terrorists because NASA wasn't hiring that day.

Has anyone reported a reek of mixed perfume in any of the bomb areas, before or after explosion?

Doesn't make sense. If you want a 'napalm' effect there are better options than cologne. Oh, and alcohol accelerants doesn't burn anything like napalm.

I heard a small piece about this on my local news tonight. I googled but could find only this article. Perhaps some FReepers will chime in and may have some answers to your questions.

There was an article a while back about Bin Laden's stepbrother creating his own line of perfume.

I believe its symbolism. Muslims dont like the perfume ads they see.

Probably incinerated, I'm thinking...perfume has a scent because of the presence of oils, however minor, combined with alcohol for preservative and application. That'd all be incinerated by heat/an accelerant.

Materially or symbolically?

I can't say as to the viability and credibility of the article and what is written here, but, just going on the basis that the story is credible (might not be, though, as you suggest, but saying that it is for now), the terrorists are described as reviling perfumes because of what, to Muslims bent on terrorism, these perfumes represent (vanity/vilenss of Western culture, I am surmising)...

Thus, they'd be engaging in some sort of representational act by blowing up perfumes and other elements that symbolize, to them/any terrorist, something that is decrepit about Western culture. So, it'd make sense that they wouldn't opt for more practical accelerants/combustibles but would chose symbolic elements (such as perfumes).

Waste of good perfume, not to mention precious human lives and a society's infrastructure. And, something that (very stupid) terrorists always seem to miss in these terrible deeds is that they ensure that their message is hated and rejected by everyone. Thus, they lose and lose again, society wins, and remains wafting in attractive perfumes, much to their chagrine.

Best I can do with this issue...

Did they mix it all together and spritz themselves thoroughly? You know, to lure some hot babes?

I can think of two reasons to do this which have not been mentioned:

If he had been searched, he would have portrayed himself as a poor street vendor, off to make a few quid selling fake perfumes to the tourists, and threatened any inquisitive policemen with a call to the commissars of diversity and multi-culturalism.

You can get a pint bottle of isopropanol for .79, Cheap vodka costs more than that.

Probably something symbolic, murder then with their own decadence.
