Mr. Lugar said 3,000 to 4,000 of the 119,000 non-Mexican immigrants apprehended so far this year trying to cross illegally into the U.S. were from "countries of interest" such as Somalia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. That number is up from 75,371 for all of 2004 and is expected to reach 148,000 by fiscal year's end.

Jeez! Hey Dick, have you had a senility test lately?

Adm. James Loy, former Homeland Security deputy secretary, declined to comment on the specific plot outlined in the FBI memo, but earlier this year he suggested that such a threat is real.
"Entrenched human-smuggling networks and corruption in areas beyond our borders can be exploited by terrorist organizations," Mr. Loy said in written testimony at a congressional hearing in February. "Several al-Qaeda leaders believe operatives can pay their way into the country through Mexico and also believe illegal entry is more advantageous than legal entry for operational security reasons."

But they're only coming to America to do the terror jobs that Americans won't do themselves.

[[If a major terrorist attack leads back to the open border, the Bush legacy will be one of abject failure and dereliction of duty.]]

Bush will be impeached, the Democrats will see to that (and I will help them). I voted for him twice but because of his outright refusal to seal the borders, I am disgusted with him.

I have to agree with you. That he has done little to nothing on border security is unconscionable. I don't understand it.

I don't think he will do anything unless there is another attack. AND it will have to be proven that they perps came over the southern border, too. That'll take a few years and millions of dollars worth of investigations and hearings. The sad thing is that if we happen to thwart such an attack the it will be interpreted that the status quo is good enough. I believe it will take a massive attack to wake these guys up.

Personally, I can't fathom the political reasons for leaving the border wide open (and this guy does nothing without a political reason). So our choices are thwart the attack and demonstrate that "every is fine, no reason to worry" (which is dead wrong) or thousands to perhaps millions of Americans die in the next attack and THEN something (maybe) gets done. It all sucks.

How can one fight a so called war on terror while leaving the border wide open?

He hasn't left the border wide open, even though it's passed as fact on this forum.

Are you saying that no terrorists have exploited our open borders and joined their respective cells in large cities and are planning the next attacks?

Of course not. But it's a problem that was around long before Dubya.

If and when a major attack is traced back to our wide open southern border, the blame will be 100% his.

Buffalo chips! You operate under the presumption that securing our border is the best action the President could take in the war on terror. It comes in at #3 (and I'm being generous here). That is a defensive strategy, which is not effective against terrorism. The best strategy against terrorism is offensive operations and intelligence. Dubya scores well on both.

"He hasn't left the border wide open, even though it's passed as fact on this forum."

LOL!!!! The wide open border FACT stems well beyond this forum.....both northern and southern are wide open. Uhh, gee , I wonder what the Minutemen were guarding.....oh no, that was part of the "closed" border. Yep, sure isnt' "porous"

"Of course not. But it's a problem that was around long before Dubya."

Oh stop it..that is so clintonesque..so because it was a problem before, means that nothing should be done now? ESPECIALLY POST 9/11??!! Reagan would have done something about it....

"You operate under the presumption that securing our border is the best action the President could take in the war on terror. "

No, but the president has had plenty of warning, plenty of "encouragement" by his base and other supporters to close our borders.

Even if we used your premise, a good offense is nothing without a good defense. Leaving the borders wide open as they are is stupid...Bush should know better, being the former gov of Texas, and so should you.

Look at the twin border pictures I posted above and tell me why I shouldn't laugh out loud at your reply.

The joke is your unsupported claim the border is not wide open. Millions a year crossing without papers is the definition of wide open. That picture is a picture of a wide open border. In response you can't say more than, "Oh, well NOW I'm convinced. Not."

I'd say that if was the best response you could make to my challenge, it's an admission of failure to made any argument.

Yes, one picture of 500 sq. yards represents the entire border. And it's all Bush's fault. And his entire legacy will be a failure. Blah blah blah.

Admission of failure? Hardly. Just complete fatigue at arguing the same points over and over again, proving how ridiculous the rhetoric is, only to see the same junk surface time and time again.

I am not doubting this report but there are so many places to cross that are much easier walking and quicker to be picked up on the road.

This is what at least 80% of the border fence looks like.

It doesn't even stop what the USBP calls "drive throughs" like this.

That is called "wide open." Millions of illegals entering a year is "wide open."

All the USBP does by catching (and releasing) 20% of border crossers on any given day is delay their entry into the USA. Border crossers have an 80% chance of making it on their first try, a 96% chance of making it on two attempts, and a 99% chance on 3 attempts.

And in the case of "Other Than Mexicans," they actually look for the USBP, who will hand them a "Notice to Appear" (Disappear) and they are released into the USA.

But you already know all of this. What I can't understand is your personal agenda in promoting the invasion of the USA.

U.S. Constitution Article 4 Section 4:

"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,

and shall protect each of them against Invasion;"

Invasion: \In*va"sion\, n. [L. invasio: cf. F. invasion. See Invade.] [1913 Webster]

1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.

Quisling: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.

That's utter nonsense. I applaud what the Minutemen have done and continue to do. But I draw the line at silly statements that the border is "wide open" or "unprotected" or that Bush "has done nothing about the border!" None of it is true. It's all hyperbole. Is there more work to be done? Of course. Nobody is arguing that.

There will be an attack towards the end of the Bush term, thus destroying his legacy.

How recently was your crystal ball calibrated?

If a border crosser has a 99% chance of succeeding on three successive tries, (after being fed, watered, rested and transported back to the starting position by the BP), then the border is wide open.

Or do you think that the 1% who quit and don't cross make it less than an open border?

The Secretary of Homeland Secutity testified before Congress last week that in order to secure the Southern border Congress would have to enact the administration's immigration reform proposals.

But some people are subrogating our national defense against terrorism to their anti-illegal laborers hysteria. If there is a major attack launched through illegally crossing the Southern border the blood will be on the hands of those who opposed the administrations requests for legislation needed to secure the border.

Fences will never stop men willing to risk their lives to feed their fanilies. And America should never ask it's professional military servicemen to shoot such men on sight when we all know that the laborers are simply doing our most undesirable lowest paying jobs.
