Mexico fugitive captured in California

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A fugitive considered one of Mexico's most dangerous criminals was arrested Tuesday in Southern California, nearly 19 years after a sensational armed escape from a courthouse, immigration officials said.

Alfredo Rios Galeana was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at his home in the city of South Gate, said agency spokeswoman Virginia Kice.

The arrest on immigration violations was the result of a multi-agency investigation by authorities in the U.S. and Mexico, she said.

Rios, who was accused of numerous bank robberies, kidnappings and murders, escaped from a Mexican federal courthouse during a hearing in 1986. He was one of a group of inmates freed by nearly a dozen armed men and women who burst into a courtroom, tied up 20 people and broke through a wall to escape, according to news accounts.

Mexico City prosecutor Bernardo Batiz said Tuesday that Mexican authorities had been sent to California to confirm Rios' identity.

Kice said Rios could be deported immediately to Mexico, and Batiz said officials planned to place him in a maximum-security prison.

Let's not be too hasty. The Mexicans have a few fugitives that we'd like returned. We ought to be discussing a trade rather than automatic deportation.

It is a cliche for those of us from the north, who have broken the law, to flee across the border.

Didn't think it would be the other way around.

Wonder how many more like him are up here.

19 years is enough time to make lots of little anchor babies.

Did they mention that he was an ILLEGAL alien?

I wonder how many millions it will cost Rios to get out this time. Probably a few bucks more than last time. Do you think the Mexicon authorities take bribes? Nahhhh, never.

He came here to commit the crimes Americans won't commit.
