Federal authorities said an illegal immigrant fired six shots at a U.S. Border Patrol agent early Sunday morning as the agent was coming to the assistance of a Yuma County Sheriff's Office deputy who was under attack by a group of rock-throwing illegal aliens.
No one was reportedly injured and federal authorities are investigating the incident, which they say points to evidence of escalating violence along the border.
Joe Brigman, spokesman for the Border Patrol's Yuma sector, said a group of illegal aliens were throwing rocks at a female deputy at County 23rd Street and the Colorado River levee.
The deputy called the Border Patrol for help. When an agent arrived, he was fired upon "at close range" by an illegal immigrant who was among another group of about six illegal immigrants near Salinity Canal, Brigman said.
Brigman said both groups of illegal aliens fled on foot back into Mexico.
The Border Patrol did not release the name of the agent who was fired upon and the YCSO did not return calls placed by The Sun seeking additional information.
Brigman declined to speculate on why the Border Patrol agent did not shoot back and said Mexican authorities were notified of the incident.
The shooting, Brigman said, is indicative of the rise in violence along the border.
"Unfortunately, violence along the border directed at illegal aliens, American citizens as well as law enforcement and the Border Patrol, is on the rise," Brigman said.
The Sunday morning shooting marks the second time in eight months area law enforcement officers have been reportedly fired upon near the Mexico border.
In mid-December 2004, two sheriff's deputies were shot at by an unidentified gunman on the Mexican side of the border.
No one was reportedly injured and the gunman was never caught.
Since July 2004, there have been two reported murders along the border here in the Yuma sector. In both instances the victims were illegal immigrants from Mexico. Both homicides remain unsolved.

Sure, the Mexican authorities are hot on the case....
Give the border patrol automatic weapons and long guns and let em shoot back. Or even better, shoot first.
Just another Mexican illegal doing a job Americans don't want. When Mexico and her fleeing hordes receive whatever the demand of the day is, they'll think up something else. Like ceding them half the US. Oops, that's already in the works. Mexico is 'integrating' with the US, and the fleeing hordes are 'trusted travelers'. There. Feel better? I thought not.

What? We're the good guys...reread the article...even after being shot at 6 times, the BP agent did not return fire. Not that he couldn't...he just didn't.
Celebrate Diversity!
(I know, silly me...)
What's "Mexican authorities"?
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
Why unnecessarily provoke one's superiors? Better to 'take one for the(open borders) team'.
WHY NOT??? What was the deputy doing while dodging rocks? What was the Border Patrol Agent doing during this altercation? Are they not allowed to defend themselves or do both need firearms training?
Wishful thinking. It will take at least a dozen deaths among the sons/daughters of the rich at the hands of illegal aliens before this is even considered.
He probably could not tell who the shooter was in the crowed and decided not to just spray them down with lead. You can bet the weapon would not have been recovered and the agent left out to dry.

I dont know where they get their stats from but the Border Patrol is being shot at every day. Two agents were seriously wounded just last week in Tucson.
Did you hear any comment from anybody in our Federal Government about the two Border Patrol Agents that were ambushed, shot at and wounded last week?
Our guys are being hung out to dry because it is not politically correct to say anything negative about these good hearted people who are just trying to improve their lives.
George W. Bush was notified of this, but he obviously doesn't give a crap.
How many BP agents or county sherriffs have to die before the Feds get the message, we are under seige.
"It's going to take at least a dozen Border Patrol deaths from Mexicans shooting across the border before our President will put the military on the border with instructions to fire at will."
I don't believe it will happen even then. Not with the "pro illegal alien protection societies" in this country, the ACLU and Amnesty International. Not to mention all the politicians that live in the border states and are reaping benefits from illegals in this country.
Heartiest dittos.
