A bomb exploded in a trash bin in downtown Port-of-Spain on Monday, wounding at least six people, officials said. Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown said on the radio that one person was killed, but Deputy Police Commissioner Glen Roach reported only that eight had been wounded, including two with major injuries.

Cynthia Carrington-Murray, director of Trinidad General Hospital, the largest hospital in Port-of-Spain and the closest to the scene, said 11 people were wounded and there had been no deaths.

"We have no idea of the kind of device used nor who is behind it," Roach said.

Local media reported that a man was seen placing a package in the garbage bin shortly before the explosion around 2 p.m. on the corner of Frederick and Queen streets, a major intersection in the capital city of the two-island Caribbean nation. The site of the blast is two blocks from the national Parliament, which was meeting at the time.

After Monday's explosion Police searched the downtown commercial district for other explosives and evacuated the area, the mayor said on the radio.

"I am shocked at this event," Brown said. "We definitely have to exercise all necessary precautions and I am sure the security forces are sparing no effort that the country is safe."

Anyone else remember stories about Al-Qaeda and the islamofascists making bases and meeting up in South America and Central America?? Looks like they taught their stupid nazi tricks to a few of the natives. Shame.

I haven't been to Trinidad in a long time. It used to be a pretty laid back place. I was there just after they became a country. The answer which seemed to settle every minor dispute or disagreement, including one auto accident I knew about, was "It's a free country now."

There is a small but feral Muslim population in Trinidad. They tried to overthrow its elected government in 1990.

Actually, it must be the imperialist foreign policy of the hegemonic government of Trinidad that is the root cause, no? If only the Trinidadian troops hadn't invaded the middle east!!!!

"Deputy Police Commissioner Glen Roach reported "ONLY" that eight had been wounded, including two with major injuries? Good thing it was only eight wounded cause if it was a larger amount than we have people assuming it was done by the followers of the "religion of peace". We sure caught a break this time." What qualifies as a "major injuries?" Instead of say loosing permanent hearing in one ear you have to give up an arm or a leg?

Looks like they are looking for more bases, time to use some Raid for de-infestation.

Over on DU they're wondering how many troops Trinidad & Tobago have in Iraq. That's the DUmmies first response.
The fact that there are no Trinidadian troops, ANYWHERE, except in Trinidad, does not lead them to believe the attack is unwarranted. They blame George Bush. Really. Go look for yourself.
