NAACP raises concerns over course of country

MILWAUKEE -- Civil rights advocates on Sunday called the blurring lines between religion and politics a threat to equal opportunity, and said conservative judges and lawmakers are threatening progressives' gains nationwide.

"You have three branches of government that seem to have an orchestrated approach to, in effect, chisel away at civil rights protections. It's systematic," said Hilary Shelton, director of the Washington, D.C., branch of the NAACP, speaking at the group's annual convention.

The 96th annual gathering of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People comes as the Baltimore-based nonprofit has been struggling to raise money.

Its new president, retired Verizon executive Bruce S. Gordon, has pledged to improve efficiency in the organization and raise an endowment, as well as to stress economic equality.

During weekend panel discussions and meetings, convention delegates discussed laws that bar felons from voting, racial patterns in death penalty sentencing, reparations for slavery and the federal funding of religious groups, among other issues.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Va., said religious groups that receive federal funding for social programs are increasingly hostile to participants who don't share their views on social issues -- a violation of equal protection laws and a broad threat to civil rights.

He also criticized legislation proposed last year by North Carolina Republican Rep. Walter Jones that would allow religious leaders who receive federal funding to endorse political candidates from the pulpit.

"When you allow discrimination based on religion in federal programs, you lose all your moral authority to enforce civil rights legislation," Scott said. "Typically, you rely on the judiciary to get you through times like this, but unfortunately the judges being appointed only affirm many of the things happening."

NAACP officials also announced Sunday that Mexican President Vicente Fox, who has been criticized for telling a trade group that Mexicans in the U.S. are doing work that "not even blacks want to do," had declined two invitations to attend the convention.

Fox cited scheduling conflicts in declining the invitation, NAACP officials said.

More than 8,000 people are attending the six-day convention, which runs through Thursday.

This is ripe coming from an organization that once followed the REVEREND Dr. Martin Luther King, who did much of his political work from behind a church pulpit.

The NAACP is demonstrating that they are merely a front organization for the left, who has recently targeted christianity.

I'm sure the REVEREND Jessie Jackson will cooperate with the effort fully.

"National Association for the Advancement of Colored People"

I thought we couldn't say "colored people" anymore.Aren't we supposed to say "people of color"? The entire thing is most confusing ,to me at least.

The death of the NAACP. I was naive enough to think that appointing a former Verizon exec instead of the usual race baiter politians and 'religious leaders' would be an improvement. Instead, this once venerable civil rights organization has drunk from the Democrat Party punch bowl. Just like the unions, the NAACP seems bent on destroying their own agenda and prostituting themselves to the democrat party line--no religion, gay rights, pro abortion, no charter schools or vouchers, etc. The AFL CIO has recently been doing the same thing, promoting gay rights, abortion rights, separation of church and state, anti war, the whole democrat agenda, even to the point of actively hurting their membership as when the unions recently decided to oppose drilling in ANWAR, even though the UAW happens to make big american cars that need lots of cheap gas.

"When you allow discrimination based on religion in federal programs, you lose all your moral authority to enforce civil rights legislation," Scott said.

But, it's ok for someone with less than average grades to get in college ahead of another who has better grades because they're black, hmm?

That kind of racism is ok.... Got it.

Walter Williams had an interesting opinion on that.

He said: (Paraphrasing) I was a n****r then I was a negro, than a black man then African/American and then a person of color.I choose to refer to myself as a negro and will do so until I am dead.

I'd hate to go through life with folks wondering if my position in life were due to some quota.

As would I.

I guess to some, WHAT you get is more important than HOW you get it.

Yes, I'm a white male but I'm sick of apologizing for it. When does the so-called fight for civil rights go away? I don't think there is a person in this country who is for discrimination based on skin color. The Equal Rights/Civil Rights legislation was passed in the 60s. Why isn't this done with by now? We passed the needed discrete legislation but the NAACP's premise is that Civil Rights is an ongoing battle and we need a Civil Rights Commission to monitor discrimination and we need new Civil Rights legislation every year. How pathetic is this?: My 2 New Hampshire Senators are being called racists by the Democrats because they did not co-sponsor the anti-lynching legislation (they did vote for it though).
When does the equal protection clause of the constitution start applying to white-male me? Barak Obama was able to advance himself using Race Based quotas to get into college and law school even though he was NOT a decendent of a slave.

Recently, the head of the NH Democratic Party Kathy Sullivan said the DNC is looking at other states for the first primary because New Hampshire is not a diverse enough state. Not diverse enough? In english, it means there are too many white people in NH, so let's have the first primary somewhere else. Heh, I understand how others feel that NH should not be the first Primanry of every Presidential election, but don't tell me NH is too white. BTW, What's wrong with being WHITE?
