Why do people care about who the Chief Justice is anyway? Has it ever held any power further then that of an Associate Justice?

Read history for yourself about who passes out the cases and assigns judges to the circuit courts for overseeing.

The Chief Justice does not decide which cases are brought before the court and only gets on vote.

Sounds like a figurehead position to me.

I wondered the same thing; but, some time ago heard some talking head saying that the Chief Justice decides what cases they hear.

Now, I'm not positive that is true (and someone here WILL correct me if I'm wrong); but, if it is true then they do hold some power.
