Atlanta Motor Speedway, Airfield Suffer Damage

Damage to Atlanta Motor Speedway after possible tornado from remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy, Hampton, Georgia

The worst property damage from Wednesday night's storms appeared to be in Henry County where several homes were hit by what officials say was at least one tornado.

Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., suffered significant damage. The track was covered in debris. Roofs and facades were torn off buildings.

Several units at the speedway condominiums were damaged. Five of the 48 units are regularly occupied. Everyone got out safely. The building is currently unoccupied while it is checked for safety. Officials estimate it suffered $50 million in damage.

"My doors flew open and just a bunch of wind a bunch of debris coming in and everything. It was kinda just crazy and after that it just kinda calmed down and after that it was just one big pop. After that all I could hear was just wind blowing," Stevie Monce.

Most of the damage happened between 9:30 - 10 p.m. on Wednesday when the worst bands from Tropical Storm Cindy moved through the area.

"All of a sudden we heard this noise coming and Chris hollered, 'We got to get out of here. We got to get out," said DJ Ray. "We made our way back to the second bedroom and got in the master bath back there and he stayed in the doorway, like this, and I was squated down in the tub... It took my heart about an hour to slow down."

In Clayton County, four airplanes were severely damaged at Tara Field. Some of the planes were overturned, while some were damaged by debris.

Please, please, please DEI -- give Mikey another contract!

Everyone knows, especially with the impound rules, that the more cars a stable puts on the track, the more information can be gathered and shared between the teammates. DEI needs more cars if they are going to compete with Hendrick and Roush on the 1.5 mile tracks. Junior and Truex, Jr. are signed. Re-sign Mikey!

Tornado tears apart Atlanta Motor Speedway

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - The Atlanta Motor Speedway looks as if it was in a high-speed crash.

Entire sections of its grandstand and luxury boxes are shredded. Oak trees, flagpoles and a light tower are snapped. On some of the speedway's condominiums, the roof is caved in, windows are shattered.
Every structure at the facility, which hosts NASCAR races and smaller events, was roughed up by a half-mile-wide tornado spawned Wednesday night by the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy.

"Everything but the track surface has suffered some kind of damage... There are some buildings that will have to be torn down," said Speedway President Ed Clark, who estimated $25 million to $40 million in damage at the speedway.

While the speedway's races for the next week have been canceled, NASCAR's Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500 — set for Oct. 30 — will go on as planned, Clark said. "We'll be here and we'll be running the race as scheduled," he said.

The bowl shape of the speedway helped the tornado form and it eventually remained on the ground for about four miles, also hitting the Tara Field airport in Hampton, the National Weather Service said. Four planes were overturned and two hangars were damaged at the airport.

Lans Rothfusz, the meterologist in charge at the National Weather Service's Peachtree City office, said a preliminary investigation indicated the tornado was a category F-2, which typically have wind speeds of 113 mph to 157 mph.

Elsewhere in Georgia, at least two deaths and severe damage to homes and businesses were also blamed on the storm system that knocked down trees, blew off roofs and dumped more than 5 inches of rain as it moved Wednesday night through north and west Georgia
