Editors' Note The Op-Ed page in some copies of Wednesday's newspaper carried an incorrect version of the below article about military recruitment. The article also briefly appeared on NYTimes.com before it was removed. The writer, an Army reserve officer, did not say, "Imagine my surprise the other day when I received orders to report to Fort Campbell, Ky., next Sunday," nor did he characterize his recent call-up to active duty as the precursor to a "surprise tour of Iraq." That language was added by an editor and was to have been removed before the article was published. Because of a production error, it was not. The Times regrets the error. A corrected version of the article appears below. * * * LOS ANGELES AMERICA is facing a military manpower meltdown. Overwhelmed by the demands in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army has all but used up its emergency recruiting measures: higher enlistment bonuses; more expensive marketing campaigns; even home loans for some recruits. Although the Army recruited its quota for June, it will probably miss its target for the year. Retention is going fairly well, thanks in part to re-enlistment incentives that are tax-free when a soldier re-ups in a combat zone.

how does an editor add stuff liek that? i mean if the guy never said it, how can it be edited in?
Why would you add it and plan on removing it. If I just nod my head and smile stupidly I will get along and can be a liberal too.
What's up with THAT? Do they have some need to at least write lies before they finally publish? If so, that is SICK.
He puts his blinking cursor where he wants it to appear and he types. The better question (and we all know the answer to it) is WHY did the editor add it?
My guess is it was an in house practical joke that backfired. I hope the editor really gets reamed for it, but it being NYT and all, he'll probably get an award.
It happens when an editor is exercising his bias and re-writing the material to his own satisfaction...out of spite.
And then forgets to delete his inserted comments...
This time, the editor and the New York Times got caught. We got to see behind the curtain...
The man behind the curtain playing with the computer is of no consequence ignore him what he is doing is for the good of all. Sarc off

Brit Hume covering this now.
Brit Hume just reported this story.
Just to show us the true feelings of the contempuous little snots that work at the Times.
Another example of the left's "false but accurate" defense?

The bathhouse boys are at it again.
Was the correction and apology on the front page? In the Editors office they are probobly still laughing over it.
But the added language was factually true which makes it ok. They got it from a Kinko's in Waco TX. ;-)
