Spain's former prime minister admitted that Europe is an unreliable mediator in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts. "Europe likes appeasement very much; this is one of the most important differences between us and the States," Jose Maria Aznar told the Jerusalem Post last week. "In Europe, Israel is not very popular, not only this (Sharon) government, all governments," he said. "Most Europeans support the Palestinian cause." Aznar, who was ousted last year amid public opposition to his commitmnet of Spanish forces to help the U.S.-led war in Iraq, is in Israel to receive an honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan University. He said the European Union's approach to the Middle East is guided by a need to distinguish itself from U.S. policies in the region. "Do we Europeans have the capacity to change the situation and influence this area? The answer is no," he said. Asked if Israel should pay attention to the United States but not necessarily to Europe, Aznar replied, "Cenrtainly."
That pretty much says it all.
This echoes comments by former Green Party European Unions MP Ilke Schroeder who accused Europe of fighting a proxy war against the United States by deliberately funding Palestinian terrorism.

The Palestinian cause = the destruction of Israel.
pinging the pingers.
Precisely correct.
Most Europeans support the Palestinian cause.
The Palestinian cause = the destruction of Israel/United States = the destruction of Europe/Palestine
Aznar is one staunch friend of the US and the cause of anti-terrorism in general. I am beginning to wonder how he ever got elected in Spain in the first place.
Spaniards were asked to put their balls to the wall and got spooked! They will pay for it in spades down the road.
Aznar, Blair and Ilke Schroeder are true friends and true allies. We should remember there are a few decent Europeans out there still. Good for Aznar for making those comments.

God bless Aznar. Truly a friend to freedom. Too bad he botched the 3/11 Madrid attack's public relations. That is what got him thrown out (not because of Iraq as the article claims).
Aznar is great! Sadly, he was never good at PR during the entire time of his stay in La Moncloa (Spanish government building). Of course, the fact that most of the Spanish press is controlled by a Spanish version of Ted Turner who hates conservatives didn't help. They were out to get him, and their manipulation of March 11 finally let them do it.
My father has dealings with bureaucrats from Spain...in his words, since Zapatero, Spain "has hit the self-destruct button".

i recently had to fly Iberia, the Spanish national flag carrier, and boy have they gone down hill -- i'll never do that again (i actually wanted to take the national Chilean airline, which is really excellent, but scheduling made that impossible). same with the now ssedy and inept barajas airport in Madrid since i was there six or seven years ago. its really a pity they have now decided to emulate france rather than the UK or the US, as they once did...
zapatero is really running spain into the ground in a hurry...
Is Europe on a suicide watch?
That's what is heartbreaking about Spain. Under Aznar, Spain was back. The pride was back. Spain was close to being on a par with the large countries on the Continent.
Now it has truly, totally, thoroughly self-destructed.
