Artificial Meat Could Be Grown on a Large Scale
www.universetoday.com ^ | July 6, 2005 | Universe Today

Summary - (Jul 6, 2005) Scientists at the University of Maryland think that large quantities of artificial meat could be produced to supply the world with animal-free meat products, like chickenless nuggets. This is based on experiments for NASA, that created small amounts of muscle fibre cultured from single cells. According to the researchers, larger quantities could be grown in thin sheets and then stacked up to create thickness. Of course, they need to figure out a way to exercise it to make it taste like regular meat

why grow artificial meat on a grand scale when we already grow REAL meat on a grand scale??

Theoretically, it could be cheaper than feeding, pasturing, and slaughtering chicken or cattle, and with less disease, suffering and waste.

"I used to be a lifeguard before Senator Kennedy hired me" said David Spence of Boston. "He really does not move that fast so keeping the orange cones around him is pretty easy. He pays me $10.00 and hour and so far he seems happy with my job performance. I'm not really sure why he wants to make sure he always has orange cones around him. He makes me put them real close to him when he walks across a bridge. He seems like he is really afraid of falling off a bridge into the water. One afternoon he was walking across a bridge and dropped his bottle of scotch and almost tripped over one of the cones and fell into the water. He was rolling towards the edge of the bridge and was screaming something about "Mary Jo" beind down there waiting for him. The bottle of scotch fell into the water and Senator Kennedy started crying. Fortunately, I keep extra bottles taped into the inside of the cones. When Senator Kennedy gets thirsty he lies down on his back, puts the small end of the cone into his mouth and I just pour the whole bottle in from the other side. It's really not a bad job!"

This doesnt seem like 'artificial meat' to me...if its 'cultured' from real animal muscle tissue then its still real animal muscle tissue isnt it? Thus REAL meat?

What is the process of culturing used here anyway? As a Vegetarian [NOT Vegan] I've often wondered if animal muscle tissue could be CLONED to provide 'guilt-free meat' for 'veggies' lol.

Imo since it appears this is not produced by the slaughter of living animals this could moot some vegetarians moral reservations that they base their choice not to consume meat on if this MEAT is 'cultured' from cell samples removed from a donor animal non-lethally;

"no animals were harmed in the making of this 100% REAL BEEF burger!" ;-)

Sounds good to me!

the real stuff tastes better too, i bet.

I'll have a slab of barbequed fake meat with some Tang™ to wash it down. Mmmmm... good!

I asked my wife if she wanted a bread maker one time, I will not go into the answer I will just say we don't have one. Hate to think what her answer would be for a meat maker
