St. Peter today welcomes a Hero, a Patriot, a man of honor, and one whose footsteps I was proud to follow.
The waters are rising today on the strength of many a tear at that magical place where the Severn meets the tide.
I never felt as uncomfortable for a man as I did watching him in that Veep debate with Dan Quayle and Algore. You could tell he was so out of his league you felt sorry for him.
Unfortunately, my main memory of him will be that Saturday Night Live skit.
Fly with the angels, sir.
Who am I? Why am I here?

Did anyone tell Admiral Stockdale yet?
Kidding.. RIP Admiral. Condolences to the family.
Fourth obit post with "Stockdale" in the easily-searched title.
Just the other day I watched the "best of" Phil Hartman video that includes the bit with Hartman playing Stockdale as Perot (Dana Carvey) tries to ditch him on a country road. Not one of the funnier bits on the video . . .
Admiral Stockdale was a great man, a great sailor and a great American.
Men of his caliber are the rarest and most precious of treasures.
When people speak the word courage, this man comes to my mind, because he embodied courage. It was woven into every fiber of his mind, body and soul.
There is no one among his critics who could hope to endure what he did as my countryman with the poise, dignity and gallantry he demonstrated over seven long years of the deepest torment and despair.
He was the highest-ranking officer captured during the Vietnam War, and he represented some of the finest virtues and most noble character of any officer in human history.
A Congressional Medal of Honor and four Silver Stars are only footnotes to the heights of his heroism.
Greatness such as his cannot be tarnished by the passage of time.
I weep at his passing, salute his memory, and take eternal pride in the fact that I may name him a fellow sailor of the United States Navy.
God bless Admiral Stockdale.
Where he now is, is a better place for it.
Fair winds and following seas, dear friend.
