Syria seen stepping up aid to Iraq-bound insurgents
Washington Times ^ | Wednesday, July 6, 2005 | By Rowan Scarborough

Syrians are increasing assistance to foreign fighters preparing to enter Iraq and kill civilians and U.S. troops, despite months of pressure on Damascus from Washington to crack down on the jihadists. A U.S. official said recent intelligence shows that Syria is the home to Web sites that exhort militants to come to the country for preparation to fight and die in Iraq. Syrians also are providing barracks-like housing as the recruits from Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Morocco and other Muslim countries prepare for a jihad, or holy war. The fighters also receive weapons, training and money in Syria. The Syrian government denies that it is helping the terrorists. American commanders in Iraq have refrained from publicly saying the Ba'athist regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad is actively assisting the insurgency. The Web sites and housing are why U.S. commanders, in hearings last month, referred to Syria's capital of Damascus as the "hub" for foreigners entering Iraq and carrying out daily suicide car bombings. Previously, officials have said that terrorists receive phony identification cards and passports in Syria and that they use the papers to cross Iraq's porous border. But fresh intelligence reports show that the staging in Syria is becoming more elaborate, the official said.

When a regime smiles and literally begs to be attacked, it ought to be attacked. That's just common decency.

They feel safe because they've heard that we're bogged down in a bottomless quagmire with no end in sight and we're doomed and trapped and so on...

A coworker of mine just returned from a year at Abu Graib in Jan. He says that when he first got there most of the prisoners were Iraqi. By the time he left most being brought in were foreigners. According to yesterdays Washington Post some of the top Sunni clerics are about to issue a fatwa calling for Sunnis to stop the violence, register to vote, and start participating in the political process. This should make it easier for us to turn security over to Iraqis and we can relocate coalition forces on the Syrian border. Besides securing the border, this will give the impression of a smaller footprint of American forces to Iraqis and intimidate Syria into being more cooperative. If we go into Syria now we will have to increase the number of troops in the Middle East and we will lose even more support for the War on Terror.

Emcouraging news but the border will only be secured in the long run when we overthrow the Baathist regime ni Syria and do something about the Iranians and Saudi Wahhabists.

You are absolutely right. The point I was trying to make however, is that we have to be patient. We are moving forward. We are winning the hearts and minds not only of Iraqis but others in the middle east as well. Let's win some allies among the citizenry in these other countries before we just go invading everybody. We are wining in Lebanon without firing a shot or putting one boot on the ground.

Not true, we don't have to go into Syria, we only have to attack the barracks with a cruise and stealth attack that destroys them. It would send an unequivical message to Syria, Iran etc.
Then through diplomatic contacts let Assad know that wherever he is is next if he doesn't put a top to it.
Then do it.
Tanke him and his family out with him and let the collective outcry fall on deaf ears.

I think Clinton already proved that doesn't work with terrorists and the regimes that support them. We shouldn't point the gun unless we are willing to pull the trigger.

I think the American military right now is using the best approach. They are treating Iraq like a roach motel. The insurgents come in and they never leave.

To think we do not have spec-ops working behind the scenes would be naive. I believe we are encouraging this activity. It would be easy to just put a couple of predators on the border and anything that comes into Iraq gets zapped on entry.

However, the terrorists are congregating in one place and if I recall, that is how the President prefers it. better there than here. If 1/2 million terrorists came into Iraq, we would eventually kill them all.

"Bet that Dang Cowboy President and his ranch hands never thought of any of this."

Of course he didn't. If I recall correctly, Kerry and his compadres at Moveon said Bush is a moron, so it must be true.

Amen, Amen! It needs to be just like Libya in 86, Qaddafhi and his clowns. Bush said you are either with the terrorists or with us. We need to put the smack down on Syria.
