Suspect at casino had traffic violation in rare police killing -

An Emeryville police officer shot and killed a man outside a popular casino early Monday after the suspect pinned the officer with a stolen car, authorities said as they investigated the small East Bay city's first fatal shooting by police in decades.

Julio Paredes, 23, of Oakland died after an officer shot him at about 3:45 a.m. in the parking lot of the Oaks Card Club at 4097 San Pablo Ave., authorities said.

The incident happened after an Emeryville K-9 officer stopped Paredes for an traffic violation as he was driving a silver Toyota Spyder sports car and asked for his license and registration, authorities said.

But the motorist refused and put the car in reverse, put his foot on the gas pedal and "screeched out," pinning both the officer's legs between two cars, said Emeryville police Cmdr. Jeannie Quan.

"The officer was pretty much scared and fearful for his life and ends up shooting the driver," Quan said.

The officer fired three shots through the windshield. Paredes died at 4:52 a.m. at Highland Hospital in Oakland.

OK, based solely on the headline, a cop was attacked by a car, and the driver was shot, but we don't know by whom.

Who writes these headlines and how can I get that job?.

Damned If I Know

The officer's attorney, Paul Brennan of Pleasant Hill, noted that if a moving car is perceived as a threat, police officers are not generally trained to fire at hubcaps or tires.

Why do I have a feeling the criminal's family is going to sue the cop and the city because the cop didn't shoot at the wheels ? I just know it, some lowlife ACLU type of attorney is going to sue.

The officer fired three shots through the windshield

The windshield? Wouldn't that be the rear window?

If you're pinned between the back of the idiot's car and your car (or whoever's is behind you), where else are you going to shoot at to stop the idiot but at him?

According to the article, the suspect was shot through the windshield. How does that work?

A rear windshild? Never heard of it. Is that some kind of European model?

I thought they called it windshield, due to wind striking the front glass on a vehicle. Thus the word "windshield".

The front and rear glass on a car are both called "windshields" and have been for many decades. Call up an auto glass service and ask for a quote to have your "rear window" replaced, and they'll ask which side. Tell them you need your rear windshield replaced and they'll know what it is.

The Brits call windshields "windscreens".

It's been over a dozen posts and nobody has called the cop a jack-booted thug yet.

Odd.

Kind of hard to call a guy a JBT when the suspect tries to run him over with a car and then pins him to a wall or a car like a bug.

Now, if the moron had tried to run over the cop, failed, and then gor dragged out of his car and was beaten savagely, I suspect we'd have more JBT-accusers.

I think it'd be the same basic principle if he were pinned in front...where else would he shoot? I grant you the reporter didn't exactly make that clear.

Traffic stop, suspect puts it into reverse, pinning the officer, clearly the shot/shots were fired through the rear window of the suspect vehicle.

Who ever wrote the article should find another line of work.

This is exactly what the reporter wanted to do. Confuse the confused reader. Make it so the cop was at fault for being there and the criminal is just a nice guy caught at a bad time. The liberal newspapers are hiring reporters to lie writing the stories in order to sell more papers. Look for the bottom line.

The only confusion here is how is it possible someone is paying him to be a reporter.

I don't think he was attempting to lie here. I just think he is incompetent.

If you want to be picky about it, the proper term for the rear glass on an auto is "backlight".
