I find the policies covered in No Child Left Behind Act that address the issue of turning over children's names to the government for recruiting more than a little disconcerting as well. Does that make me a liberal?

Its all based on federal money--don't accept the money & don't provide the lists. Private schools can do that now.

The military isn't that hard-up, IMHO. People who receive the largesse of this government shouldn't be surprised when something is asked of them in return. Particular any who are receiving largess via federal government (housing, medicaid, food, disability, etc.)
That being said, billbears.. my own wonder about this part of the No Child Left Behind? WOULD such data culled reveal... illegal immigrants? CA Dems and liberals have an absolutely vested interested in growing the numbers of illegals living in the USA, particular in CA.

It's silly to think that the government does not already have your kids names. If you file taxes and claim kids as dependents - they have your kids name. No? This is just the liberals trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.
As a parent of teenage sons, I can tell you that the military recruitment literature was only a tiny percentage of the enourmous amount of mail my kids get (the college recruiters are WAYYYY more aggressive than the military).
Don't forget, our sons still have to register for selective service when they turn 18 - so what is all this fuss about?

Does that make me a liberal? Not at all. The NCLBA itself is about as liberal/socialist/communist as a program can get. (Thank you George "One World" Bush.)
If you decide the solution is to lie about the war in Iraq and undercut the WoT with anti-American rhetoric and convince your children that the threat of terrorism is just a scam made up by Pres. Bush and war mongering Republicans then you'd be a liberal.
The intelligent solution is to keep your kids out of gooberment skools. Preferably home-schooling them.

During the Carter administration, and I assume earlier, the military had full access to high schools. This is not a new thing. They were at my high school several times a year. There was a very active campaign to tempt people into joining the military including MASSIVE cash bonus payouts for certain specialties. A buddy of mine gout an $18K signing bonus in 1978 and a $23K reenlistment bonus in 1983. Not bad when the base pay was about $855/month for our rank. If you could refer two or more people to the recruiter and they joined you actually could get you E2 the second you put on the uniform.
Recruiters provide a path for many kids to leave bad homes, bad neighborhoods, or over barring parents. Kids need to grow up on their own. Yes, I have children (2 girls) and yes I did suggest they serve their country as part of the military. They chose a different path. It's their life - their choice.

Children aren't allowed to enlist in the military. Thank god for those enlistees and their families that are willing to carry the load for the freeloaders.
