New Delhi, June 26 (PTI) Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Washington, the US has indicated its interest for cooperation with India in advanced weaponry and missile defence.

This was reinforced during talks visiting US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns had with Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and senior officials here this week.

Bilateral security cooperation is expected to be one of the key areas for discussions Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee will have with his American counterpart Donald Rumsfeld during his ongoing visit to the US. By Zhao Huanxin (China Daily)
Updated: 2005-04-12 06:33

China and India began forging a strategic co-operative partnership, yesterday, and stepped closer to making a final settlement of their border disputes.

The results, together with a consensuses on expanding "friendly and mutually-beneficial co-operations," came after nearly 3 hours of talks between Premier Wen Jiabao and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh yesterday afternoon, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said last night.

Interesting, but it seems that there is strong resistance in the Indian government objecting to buy F-16s and F/A-18s. What is going on? Is there some kind of threat from another country?

Can you be a bit more specific about your point-like do you mean that there is opposition to India buying American aircraft??Or whether there are people in the Indian govt who want to buy American aircraft???There are both factors at work, though the IAF has clearly stated it's preference for the Mirage-2005,though American overtures on further military & technical cooperation as well as on UNSC expansion may make things more interesting. Moreover, there is sense in keeping the French satisfied with something given that the Government has allowed Germany's HDW to make a strong bid to supply 6 submarines-a contract that the French DCN was tipped to win easily.

IF you mean a military threat from someone, well China is buying newer aircraft & investing in standoff weapons as well as modernising it's facilities in Tibet etc.In addition to F-16s,Pakistan will get over 120 FC-1 fighters & PL-12 BVRAAMs & new SAM systems from the PRC.& Lastly,Bangladesh is becoming an increasing headache, with growing Islamic radicalism as well as military ties with the PRC.

"What is going on? Is there some kind of threat from another country?"

India is technically at war with Pakistan. Pakistan is a Muslim country.
It's not that hard to understand India's logic...

ROFL! I can give you 32487732 + 1 number of reasons why the Indi-China "strategic partnership" won't happen. One of them is China supplying nukes and missiles to Pak...

I believe the Chinese are just dangling a carrot for India, to cool down the pace at which Indo-U.S. relationship is changing. It is an insincere attempt on the part of China, just a reaction to the U.S. getting closer to India.
