Americans' perception of war skewed by their exclusion
San Antonio Express-News ^ | 25 June 2005 | Austin Bay

This return visit to Iraq, however, spurs thoughts of America — to be specific, thoughts about America's will to pursue victory. I don't mean the will of U.S. forces in the field. Wander around with a bunch of Marines for a half-hour, spend 15 minutes with National Guardsmen from Idaho, and you will have no doubts about American military capabilities or the troops' will to win.

But our weakness is back home, in front of the TV, on the cable squawk shows, on the editorial page of the New York Times, in the political gotcha games of Washington.

It seems America wants to get on with its Electra-Glide life, that Sept. 10, 2001, sense of freedom and security, without finishing the job. The military is fighting, the Iraqi people are fighting, but where is the U.S. political class? The Bush administration has yet to ask the American people — correction, has yet to demand of the American people — the sustained, shared sacrifice it takes to win this long, intricate war of bullets, ballots and bricks.

Bullets go bang, and even CBS understands bullets. Ballots make an impression. But the bricks — the building of Iraq, Afghanistan and the other hard corners where this war is and will be fought — that's a delicate and decades-long challenge.

Given the vicious enemy we face, five years, perhaps 15 years from now, occasional bullets and bombs will disrupt the political and economic building. This is the Bush administration's biggest strategic mistake — a failure to tap the reservoir of American willingness produced by 9-11.

One afternoon in December 2001, my mother told me she remembered being a teenager in 1942 and tossing a tin can on a wagon that rolled past the train station in her hometown. Mom said she knew the can didn't add much to the war effort, but she felt that in some small but very real way she was contributing to the battle.

"The Bush administration is going to make a terrible mistake if it does not let the American people get involved in this war. Austin, we need a war bond drive. This matters, because this is what it will take."

She was right then, and she's right now.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bay's sentiments. But, I'm not so sure it is a matter of letting the American people get involved.

Great column.

This administration has made the mistake of wanting to "get back to normalcy" immeditely following 9/11.

Bush has made this his fight, not the nations fight.

We have an invisible military class fighting for those who have no clue as what this fight is all about.

There is nothing invisible about these men and women. To Americans everywhere, when they open their eyes they see, they know someone in the service.

Their invisibility is a function of the media's propaganda tools, and the mainstream has injured themselves severely by their bias. Fox News, the most fair of the news networks garners so many viewers because of their fairness toward the troops. People want to listen to news that casts a fair light over their loved ones.

What needs to happen is the Liberals need to stand down and stop lying.

As for greater American participation - a war bond might not be a bad idea. I'd buy a few myself, just because. I might even buy some Iraqi dinars... Who cares if the value ever rises, it is an act of betting on our success in the Middle East.

The 2002 DNC strategy memo gleaned of the server in the Senate showed us the roadmap the DNC/MSM has taken to get us to this point. They've been actively undermining this war 24/7 since day one.

I agree with you. A victim of 9/11 has been MSM. Just look at all the resignations and debacles over the last three years all due to the WOT. I fondly remember the nastiness at BBC, CNN, CBS, Newsweek and even the NYT.

MSM and the DNC have shown their true colors and Rove is slowly and painfully reeling them in with a well timed "political" speech.

WE ARE WINNING FOLKS.

I don't quite agree that this is Bush administration's biggest strategic mistake. Have you forgot we are dealing with the sickest people we have in the Country, the Democratic insane. The brain dead group will never join the battle for a safer America so long as they are out of power.

Well I guess this does'nt fit Bay's idea of a "WAR" so he can feel free to yap at the heels of our President along with the rest of the detractors serving the propaganda goals of the MSM, DNC,Al Jezeera and the Al Queda.

What one would expect from the second paper in a one-horse town.

I truly believe that in this day and age, there are significant swaths of blue urban America that don't truly know anyone who's serving in the military. The son of a friend of a friend doesn't really count in my opinion. It's just not the same as the days when we had a much bigger service.

What are you talking about?

Most Americans are living with a 9/10 mindset.
And, the MSM is the biggest detractor as far as the war is concerned.

"But our weakness is back home, in front of the TV, on the cable squawk shows, on the editorial page of the New York Times, in the political gotcha games of Washington."

President Bush does have an uphill climb, but he could get more Americans involved.
In fact, I think he will be doing just that in his speech on Tuesday.

BTW, I perused your posts.
You don't have very many nice things to say, do ya'?

Nice things to say?
In a time of war with our enemy working every way to promote disunity.
And our own citizens as well as leaders spewing hatred and disloyalty for our Leadership and our armed forces.?
I guess I really don't sound much like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.
I appreciate your directness and honest opinion.
Always have.

LOL!

I only meant that you need to lighten up a bit.
I know things aren't great right now.
But, not all is doom and gloom. ;o)
