Microsoft plans to make Really Simple Syndication a whole lot simpler. Really.
The software maker said on Friday that it will build support for RSS into the next version of Internet Explorer, as well as into Longhorn, the Windows update scheduled to arrive next year.
"We really think that RSS is going to be key to how people use the Internet in the future," said Gary Schare, a director of strategic product management for Microsoft's Windows unit. "Because of that we are betting really big on RSS in Longhorn by integrating RSS throughout the operating system."
Most typically, RSS is used by news publishers and bloggers to notify subscribers when new information has been posted. It is also used by podcasters to alert listeners to new available audio.
For starters, Microsoft plans to make sure that subscribing to RSS feeds is as simple as choosing a favorite in Internet Explorer. Firefox already includes some RSS features, while Apple Computer added RSS support in the version of Safari included with its Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger release.

Then we will have to update it and then updates won't work creating yet another error report and blah.....blah....blah
I feel a critical update coming on already.
Cry babies
Piss, moan, piss, moan...
Repeat as necessary.
Drat. You beat me to it!
How's it go?
"Embrace, extend...."
Sounds like they are building in yet another security hole in the operating system for hackers to exploit. Microsoft just can't get the hang of engineering a secure system.
That's funny I have been using RSS for over a year now. Comes standard with Opera.
Eliminate!
...and EVERYONE will have to turn this wonderous feature off because the spyware and adware will use this as a security hole to load "poop" on your computer.
They had better make a way to SEE what is on this RSS alert stuff.
Naa theyll make it really parrrrty and call it inovation..
RSS sounds like a hole microsoft is trying to create to make a back door for themselves.
I worked at an RSS company. RSS is really, really simple. These RSS companies like Pluck, FeedBurderner, BlogLines, Newsgator, et al, all believe they have a billion dollar baby. Of course, most of the companies are hoping for a Microsoft buyout that ain't never going to happen.
RSS is a commodity technology. I think it is a good blog sharing standard to have around, but RSS is not destined to a dramatic future. It is something the large software houses can offer as a feature in many products for free.
