Mother Charged With Child Endangerment in Fatal Dog Mauling Case
The Associated Press
Published: Jun 23, 2005 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The mother of a 12-year-old boy fatally mauled by the family's pit bulls was charged Thursday with child endangerment.

Nicholas Faibish was killed June 3 by one or both of the family dogs when his mother went out to run errands. Maureen Faibish, 39, found her son in a bedroom, covered in blood from several wounds, including a major head injury.

One of the dogs was shot and killed by a police officer shortly after the attack. The other remains in animal control custody.

"His parent made the decision to leave (Nicholas) alone in a situation that endangered his life and ultimately led to his death," prosecutor Kamala Harris said in a statement.

Maureen Faibish told the San Francisco Chronicle she had been so concerned about one of the dogs that she shut her son in the basement to protect him. She said the male dog was acting possessively because the female was in heat.

An arraignment will be scheduled for next week. Faibish faces a maximum ten years in prison if convicted.

Every pit bull owner is a potential murderer.

I hope she's convicted and gets the max. I'd have liked to see a manslaughter charge, though.

After reading her asinine remarks on an earlier thread, this is most welcome and appropriate.

She called the paper to get her story out.

Glad that she did and is being charged.

One thing I will never understand about her thought process, (and I have no proof one was involved) is why did she put her son in the basement and not her damn dawg?

As I recall, this is the mother who sighed and said about her dead son something like this: "It was his time to go."

Maybe it will soon be her time to go to prison.

Sick. She shut her son in the basement??? Why didn't she lock up the dog instead?
I hope they manage to lock her up somehow.

Here's the best part, she did explain it. She said she had some clothes in trash bags down in the basement and she thought the dogs would rip them up. Nuts.

Just another responsible pit bull owner. There was a story here in the Des Moines area this week where a pit bull scaled a six foot fence and attacked a woman walking her two dogs. Anyone who owns one of these animals in a populated neighborhood or around children should be willing to face murder charges.

that was what I was wondering?????the dog meant more to her than her kid?????The dog gets the run of the house and yard and she was concerned about the dogs behavior????????If it had been someone elses kid ,she would have been charged and had a huge lawsuit on her head.....

This bitch should be charged with murder, and have to spend the rest of her life rotting in a dirty jail cell.

My sentiments exactly.

When I worked in the West Village in Manhattan as a teenager, I always wondered why all the fags had pit bulls...

I rem. this mother MONSTER !...it was hypothesized (mentally retarded kid and/or some illicit drugs) were involved. She seemed, more concerned about the 2 dogs (which were breeding) in the basement than about this unfortunate kid (who was barracaded behind a door in the basement).

There was a story here in the Des Moines area this week where a pit bull scaled a six foot fence and attacked a woman walking her two dogs.

The exact same thing happened to my wife. She was walking our three Bichons, and a young pit, which had slammed himself against the fence when I walked the dogs previously, suddenly exploded over a seven foot fence and charged the dogs. She grabbed the pit by the collar and hung on as our dogs ran. He was turning on her when a guy in a pickup jumped out and wrestled the dog down and put his knee on the dog's head.

Nobody or any dogs got hurt, but the dog is gone. I suspect it was due to the visit from animal control. The AC officer told me he told the owner that her dog was a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Is this the mother that used a shovel on the OUTSIDE of the door to lock her son in the basement?

Vicious dogs are a good argument for concealed carry permits.

why did she put her son in the basement and not her damn dawg?

It would appear that the decision accurately reflected her priorities.

There is a family about a mile from us, out in a rural area, who owns a pit bull. I found out when I stopped there, they also have a small business that is run in their yard near the house. This dog was running around loose, but I was assured it was a very friendly dog and was Great with Kids.

I have a theory - this 'business' won't be successful unless the dog goes away.
