WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Randy ''Duke'' Cunningham, R-Calif., told the House on Monday that he's been served with a document subpoena in Imperial County, Calif., and plans to comply with it.
His announcement was read on the House floor by a congressional clerk as the House convened for the week.
Cunningham spokesman Mark Olson said the subpoena, issued by Imperial County Superior Court, concerned constituent casework, but he declined to give further details. He said it was unrelated to a real estate transaction by Cunningham that federal authorities in California are investigating.
A federal grand jury has reportedly convened in California to look into the November 2003 sale of Cunningham's home to Mitchell Wade, president of the defense contracting firm MZM Inc.

And this seemingly local matter gets read on the Floor of the House, WHY?
Ethics regulations
House rules. Anytime a member receives a subpoena that is what must be done.
I heard the financial dealings with the defense contractor on Fox News..I fear this looks bad for Cunningham...
...maybe a local Democrat DA is trying smear "Duke", like the (TX Democrat Party) DA is trying the same w/ DeLay?..
"I heard the financial dealings with the defense contractor on Fox News..I fear this looks bad for Cunningham..."
I think it's reached a point where Cunningham won't be the Republican nominee in 2006 (one way or another.) But that's good news, because it means we will hold the seat in the moderately GOP-leaning district.
I would like to think that was the case, but from what I heard it really sounds bad.
Democrat Senator Robert Toricelli was taking money, custom suits, Rolex, Mercedes, antiques and cuff links from donors. The 2 Asians went to jail and Toricelli is still involved in NJ politics. Cunningham should be investigated.
We could never expect anything along those lines for the Toricelli situation. Cunningham needs to get that LIL Bobby speech down with the fist slamming and all.
Duke is my rep and he looks unbelievably guilty. Too bad as he is a nice guy and a genuine war hero. His wife is a lovely woman. I hope he steps down soon. There are plenty of good R's who would love his seat. More scoop here. This website has been after him for years but I live less a mile from his "marked down" prior home and this all looks to be true.

I'm in Duke's district and here's my response: "Yawn."
Looks GUILTY??? You've *got* to be kidding me. Where's the FACTS, the EVIDENCE against him? There's only innuendo and you're already willing to throw him over the side. RIDICULOUS!

I'm not willing to say the seriousness of the charge proves the claim. While in general housing prices have been rising, on the high-end that's been less certain. There may have been other factors. Now, what would have to be shown is that Duke *knew* the purchase as intended as a bribe and that he did anything to help the guy's company to get the contracts.
If you have more to show me, point me in the right direction.
Duke needed a good lawyer. He got himself in too deep, into something he probably didn't fully "get." And, he probably got a bit greedy (don't we all sometimes?). I love him to death, but I hope he handles this well. We all take shortcuts sometimes, but if he did wrong, he knows it and should act accordingly. Everytime I see John McCain, I wish it were Sen. Duke who we were vetting for 1600 Penn.
Alas, my favorite congresscritter . . .
Like I said, I live quite near his old place. No way was it worth $1.6 million, then or now. And eight months to sell? The market was insane last summer. My neighbor called in a tizzy because she had multiple offers in five hours and had only two weeks to pack up and move. You almost never saw For Sale signs.
Far more suspiciously, Duke reports next to no investment income and can somehow maintain the new mansion on his salary plus the wife's from the school district? AND not just keep up but rehab his yacht? The taxes on the Del Mar place were around $5K but he can pay $30K in taxes on the new one? The water bill, grounds upkeep, utilities and such are all astronomical and you'd assume they'd want some furniture and aren't going to "register" like the Clintons.
Plus, at $2.55 million, he got quite a deal, not surprisingly since he bought it from one of the Peregrine crooks, also a campaign contributor. Who knows, maybe they threw in the furniture.
I'm really surprised that Duke even had campaign contributions. He campaigns? When? In this district, you just have to an "R" and alive. He has shown really, really poor judgment at the very best. I am so disappointed in him.
