KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Capt. Nicole Malachowski, an F-15C/E pilot from RAF Lakenheath, England, is the first female pilot to be named to the Air Force Thunderbirds.
She is one of two pilots in U.S. Air Forces in Europe to make the elite aerial demonstration team, which was announced Thursday. She will be joined by Capt. Tad Clark, an F-16CJ pilot from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.
Malachowski, a member of the 48th Fighter Wings 494th Fighter Squadron, is the first female named to the team is its 52-year history.
Her commander, Col. Dan DeBree, said the Air Force couldnt have picked a better pilot or person to become the No. 3 right wing position.
Shes the whole package, he told Stars and Stripes by telephone from England. Shes the absolute perfect choice.
Malachowski, who goes by the call sign Fifi, recently wrapped up a 90-day deployment to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was vacationing in the Baltic Sea with her husband, who is also an Air Force pilot, when the team named its newest members.
She could not be reached for comment, but was quoted in an Air Force news release as saying, Women have been an integral part of the Thunderbirds team for decades. The women of yesterday and todays Air Force maintain a tradition of excellence, and it is that heritage that has given me this exciting responsibility of being the first female Thunderbird pilot.
Clark, 32, who is assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wings 52nd Operations Support Squadron, said he has wanted to join the team since childhood. He will serve as the teams advance pilot and air demonstration coordinator. He also will be the voice of the Thunderbirds during air shows as the narrator.
Im really just totally excited, he said. This is a lifelong dream. I feel really blessed that Ive been afforded the opportunity to really represent everyone else thats wearing the uniform whether in the States, overseas, or deployed.
The Thunderbirds and the Navys flight demo team, the Blue Angels, delight tens of thousands of people at air shows across the globe annually. The Air Force demo team calls Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., home and is comprised of eight fighter pilots.
Clark grew up in Seattle without his father but would later follow in his footsteps to become a fighter pilot. Navy Lt. j.g. Robert Clark, an A-6 Intruder bombardier-navigator, was declared missing in action on Jan. 10, 1973, after a mission in Vietnam. Two years ago, his remains were identified through DNA testing and buried at Arlington Cemetery 31 years to the day he went missing.
Many of his fathers friends from the war have kept in touch with Clark and have followed his career.
In some way, it makes me feel a little closer to my father when I talk to these guys, he said. So, its exciting. I know when theyre excited for me, it kind of represents how my Dad might have felt, which is kind of a neat feeling.
He said he believes divine intervention played a role in his selection to the Thunderbirds and the fact that he will be reuniting with Malachowski and Capt. Ed Casey, a member of the 56th Training Squadron at Luke Air Force, Ariz., who also made the team. He went to the Air Force Academy with both Malachowski and Casey.
Its ironic, he said. Out of the 13 that were semi-finalists, the two I knew the best were Nicole and Ed. Its kind of interesting how the Lord works. Were already good friends.
Capt. Nicole Malachowski is the first female demonstration pilot on any U.S. military high performance jet team. She is from the 494th Fighter Squadron at RAF Lakenheath, England.
Question: if she's just been named to the team..how do they already know which postition she will fly?
I thought pilots were picked for specific slots in the Thunderbirds.
There goes another empty kitchen !!!!
Lots of former thunderbirds are (or are retired) General officers - keep an eye on this lady - she is going places.
You go girl!
Excellent.
Is this W's or Rummy's fault?
How long before this trailblazer makes it to the front page of the NYT or the WaPo?
sp
Perhaps she and Condi Rice should share an apt. and bake cookies all day for the boys at the base. What an unbelieveably idiotic remark...
You bit.
Congrats, Captain Malachowski!
Remember the Old Saw from a Line Ape:
There's a light atop your airplane's tail and one on each wigntip.
Try to keep the plane between them!
Lakenheath has always had great fast movin' turners and burners. Do them proud!
Jack.
Not strictly true. She's the first woman pilot, but as Captain Malachowski stated women, have been part of the Thunderbirds team for decades.
The NCOIC of military personnel, and of reserve affairs, at my last reserve assignment, who was not a reservist, had been part of the Thunderbirds traveling team a few years before, and that was sometime in the 1983-1985 time frame.
PING!
I knew that
ROTFLMAO!!!
Good morning Issaquah King! Wow... I couldn't do that. There are times I shouldn't even be driving a CAR! LOLOL
