Algerian man gets prison for al-Qaida lies

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Algerian man who pretended he had information about a supposed al-Qaida plot to bomb five U.S. cities was sentenced Friday to a year in prison.

Ahmed Allali, 37, was convicted on three counts of making false statements. He had pleaded guilty earlier this year.

Allali was convicted for telling federal investigators he knew members of the al-Qaida terrorist network and had lived overseas with them in the late 1990s. He also told them an al-Qaida cell was planning to detonate bombs in five major U.S. cities in early 2005.

Late last year, Allali acknowledged he knew no member of al-Qaida and had fabricated the story in an attempt to avoid deportation, authorities said. He had been ordered deported after he entered the United States via Los Angeles in 1998 using a fraudulent French passport.

Authorities said investigation of Allali's claims tied up hundreds of agents nationwide, diverting resources from other terrorist leads.

Still sounds like an Al-Quida operative to me. Tied up our resources, tested our reaction, etc., etc. Sounds more like an intelligence gathering mission.

I have posted a few threads today alone about a freeze funds case here, suspect picked up and now this too.. it's not like not much is happening from a islamoterror judicial action point of view.

I hear ya, this guy is dumber than dirt or was trying to get to gitmo or such, maybe a messenger... or like you say, just tying up resources.

I'd put nothing by them. they fight to win, casualties are an accepted part of the price of Jihad in their collective mind.
