A combination of omega-3 fatty acids, found naturally in oily fish, and the anesthetic propofol appears effective in fighting breast cancer and may provide the basis for the development of new drugs to treat the disease, researchers report.
In laboratory tests, this combination reduced the ability of breast cancer cells to turn into malignant tumors -- inhibiting cancer cell migration by 50 percent and greatly reducing their metastatic activity, the study said.
Researchers at the Methodist Research Institute and Indiana University in Indianapolis studied the effects on breast cancer cells of two omega-3 fatty acids - docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) -- combined with propofol, a potent antioxidant that's been shown to inhibit cancer cell migration by only 5 percent to 10 percent.
Used alone, DHA and EPA have little effect on cancer cells.
But when used in combination, propofol and DHA or EPA have a much greater impact on the spread of malignancy, the Indianapolis team found.
"These results suggest that the novel propofol-DHA and propofol-EPA conjugates reported here may be useful for the treatment of breast cancer," the study authors concluded.
Their findings appear in the current issue of Breast Cancer Research.
I take fish oil because it's also great for the complexion and cuts down on development of arthritis.
Playing dice with someone else's life, what a game.
Wonder if I should add the Omegas too.
So is the fish oil applied topically?
How is the propofol taken or used?
huh?

Interesting.
I bought over-the-counter fish oil gel-filled pills at the local supermarket and paid about $3.25. Some like to get the high-priced named-brand fish oil at a specialized store.
If they already know what is effective ( combination of omega-3 fatty acids, found naturally in oily fish, and the anesthetic propofol), why bother with a drug that is not as likely to be effective, plus will probably have side effects that endanger the patients life?
Doesn't make sense (as usual)
I take caps that contain fish, flax, and borage oil.
Do a websearch and check out all the benefits.
"I take fish oil because it's also great for the complexion"
I find it works wonders for depression/stress too.
Be careful with flaxseed oil. It feeds prostate cancer.
Really? Interesting. One other drawback is if you get a cut or something, you bleed like crazy.
Maybe I'll scale-back and just stick with the fish and borage.
Be careful what you read, the above statement is an example of why it would be better for most people to never darken the door of a doctor. Believing false facts can shorten your life, and make what there is of it miserable.
"One other drawback is if you get a cut or something, you bleed like crazy."
It must be something else, because flax oil can't do that; if it did, I wouldn't have any blood at all, because I'm constantly getting cuts and scratches from tromping through dense brush in shorts :o)
Are you taking Ginkgo, or Cayenne? They are excellant blood thinners, and at excessive doses may cause bleeding.
Of course it does. Think profit motive.
Propofol=the milk of amnesia...we use propofol, which is suspended in milk lipids, intravenously to keep our vented patients anesthetized in my ICU. I suspect the propofol compounds(sans the milk fat) are injected directly into the cancer sites as well as given intravenously!
