Frist to force filibuster-ending vote

THE WASHINGTON TIMES June 15, 2005

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said yesterday he will force another vote to end a filibuster of President Bush's pick to be ambassador to the United Nations at the end of this week, and called Democrats' recent letter requesting information "absurd." "What's bothering me a little bit now, is that every time we sort of make a step forward, the demands grow and numbers of names being looked at, or shifting goal posts in terms of background information," the Tennessee Republican said. "It makes me think that it isn't really whether or not John Bolton could be a good ambassador representing us as we address the challenging issues at the United Nations, but there is something beyond that." But Democrats said they first made their request for two pieces of information about John R. Bolton two months ago, and Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, Connecticut Democrat, said his impression from yesterday's weekly luncheon of Senate Democrats was that they are united enough to continue to block Mr. Bolton. "If there were one this afternoon, you're asking my guess, my guess is that cloture would not be invoked," he said, referring to a vote to end the filibuster and bring the nomination to an up-or-down vote. Mr. Dodd also said several Republicans have told him they were asked to lobby Democrats but have refused. Even though they support Mr. Bolton's nomination, they support the institutional privileges of the Senate, he said. "I think they feel that this is sort of an insult to the Senate not to provide this information," he said, though he would not name the Republicans.

Moron. How can he not know what the rats are up to? When will the Republicans learn?

I rather think he knows exactly what they're up to, just thought it impolitic and counterproductive to say it outright to the press.

Because it runs in the family. His father, who had that Senate seat before Chrissy, was a damn liar too. Got censored for it if I remember right.

That's part of the problem. No one will call a spade a spade without going all 'Dean' about it.

The Prez called a spade a spade last night. You should look up a copy of his speech. He ripped the Dems a new one. I think we are going to see some real hardball played from now on and I think Cloture will pass this week on Bolton, I think the Rino senators have been handed their marching orders and last nights speech was to tell the Dems their time is up.

He said they were obtructionists and did nothing to help problems but instead created them. He told the Dems to lead or get out of the way.

The elder Dodd was censured for fund raising infractions, I believe.

Senator Tom Dodd was censured by the Senate for converting campaign funds to his personal use. Other than that he was a better Senator than his son Chris. The link below, to his papers at the University of CT, has an extensive biography. He was an FBI agent, a U. S. prosecutor at the Nurenburg Trials and a supporter of Nixon in Vietnam.

President Bush from last night...(joined in progress)

All of us in Washington have a duty to the people who sent us here. Political parties can take one of two approaches. One approach is to lead, to focus on the people's business, to take on the tough problems. And that is exactly what our party is doing. (Applause.)

The other approach is to simply do nothing -- to delay solutions, obstruct progress, refuse to take responsibility. Members of the other party have worked with us to achieve important reforms on some issues. Yet, too often, their leadership prefers to block the ideas of others. We hear "no" to making tax relief permanent. We hear "no" to Social Security reform. We hear "no" to confirming federal judges. We hear "no" to a highly qualified U.N. ambassador. We hear "no" to medical liability reform. On issue after issue, they stand for nothing except obstruction, and this is not leadership. (Applause.) It is the philosophy of the stop sign, the agenda of the roadblock, and our country and our children deserve better. (Applause.)

Political parties that choose the path of obstruction will not gain the trust of the American people. If leaders of the other party have innovative ideas, let's hear them. But if they have no ideas or policies except obstruction, they should step aside and let others lead. (Applause.)

We're a party of getting things done. Because we acted to pass the largest tax relief in a generation, our economy is growing again. We've created more than 3.5 million new jobs during the last two years. More Americans are working today than ever before in our nation's history. (Applause.)

To keep this economy growing and creating jobs, we need to make the tax relief permanent. (Applause.) We need to get rid of the death tax forever. (Applause.) And we can do something else about taxes -- I've appointed a bipartisan panel to examine our incoherent, out-of-date tax code. When their recommendations are delivered, I'm looking forward to working with the United States Congress to give this nation a tax code that is pro-growth, easy to understand and fair to all. (Applause.)

the Tennessee Republican said. "It makes me think that it isn't really whether or not John Bolton could be a good ambassador representing us as we address the challenging issues at the United Nations, but there is something beyond that."

"Something beyond that"....either the usual rank partisanship or,.....something at the UN the RATS don't want Bolton to be able to get his arms around. Something at the UN...RATS...

I will believe a filibuster when it happens. Until then this is just more hot air from Senator Frist.
